Lockers in Sand

Post by TopHilux Hilton »

Which one of these will kick some ass ?

The vehicles: SFA Hilux KZTE Eng. with 31's NO lockers vs SFA Hilux 2.4 with 33's double lockers

The terrain: Sand dune 400m long at 45 deg up

We first went down which wasnt too bad wnd then we checked how far we could go up....

Last night we had a blast and today I am smiling from ear to ear...

I kicked some ass last night....

My guess would be the KZTE. The reason for my guess is that the thiner tyre has less rolling resistance.

It also depends on time of day as well.

Few questions about the terrain:

Is the sand smooth or rutted? (virgin sand) On smooth sand, with no tracks or cross axles, the lockers wont have much effect. :|

With enough momentum any vehicle can do this dune, so what is the run-up distance. :?: :?:

Oh and a sand dune is never steeper than 39degrees... Thats just the way sand is... Unless this is dirt and not sand. :| :?

Run-up is about 30m. Very smooth and fine sand.

Well, it could be 39degrees then....

We even tried to crawl, but that is impossible...

I went about about 5m further, but with crawling he went furher again.

i think the 2.4 just needs more oomph.

too many ifs & buts & also's involved to declare an advantage here:
What is the exelleration ability of both [simple thingy like 0 - 100Kph] What is the torque difference? are the final drive ratios the same? How competent are the different drivers? what is the wheight difference between the vehicles? Is there a ground clearance difference?
What tread is on the different make of tyres here? [the more even <smoother> the tread - the further you'll get]
What was the presuure in the tyres? what profile does the tyres have? what is the 'footprint' measure of the different tyre sets?
Only then can you compare - AND feel good if you "win"

Oh - and lockers in sand does not mean much [limited slip diff will get you further ... in sand][REAL sand - like Namib & The Dunes & Botswana etc...]

Runup is too short, you wont sommer make it up there.
TopHilux Hilton wrote:i think the 2.4 just needs more oomph.
It's the 33"s that are killing it. Drop the pressures to 0.6 front and 0.5 rear. Should get you further up the dune. Also keep the revs in the powerband.

jippp Kaspas is right - the run-up is too short for a 4-cyl Toy ... (you would need a V6 Petrol [like the mighty Brutus !!! ! to make it.)
jy kan maar luister vir Cassie - dit klink brastag of hy weet wat hy doen. (ek sal intjip as hy te vêr afdwaal) :D

Who's keen for a play session on either the Sat 08 March or Sun 09 March ?

Lekker braai and couple of cold ones afterwards.

That is IF it is still accesible....
