Please advise what the difference is between the two diesels and witch is optimal for kzte motor.

Thanks

That number indicates the level of impurities (sulphur), in parts per million, in the diesel. The cleaner the diesel, the better for your truck. You should try to use 50 ppm as far as possible, especially with the newer diesel engines.

50ppm is cleaner diesel. Use it, although it might be a little more expensive than 500ppm, it also gives better performance and easier on the filters :thumbup: :thumbup:

50ppm as far as possible as Jarus indicates. But with a lower sulphur content there's an ongoing debate about lower lubrication also, hence you'd maybe hear of guys mixing diesel with 2 stroke oil (1:200 ratio). It never stops hey? :silent:

Urban legend has it, that the sulphur accumulate in the oil, which make the oil thicker almost like a grease, if you don’t change the oil regularly. The accumulation is worst then you drive short distances and switch the engine off, but if you drive long distances like trucks it doesn’t make a big difference, that’s why most trucks use 500ppm diesel. But not willing to test the urban legend on my D4D, so I’ll stick to 50ppm as much as possible.

My 3.0 d4d only run on 500ppm for 186000km's. Only 2 tanks of 150L was 50ppm, no problems to date. But will try to fill up with 50ppm as much as possible from now on.

50ppm much better. The oil will get contaminated with sulphur hence the diesel engines 7000km oil change service.

As above sulphur shortens the serice intervals primarily. Vito's usually 23000km service intervals on 50 with anything more they advice 7500km intervals....

i use 50ppm and on every 4th or 5th tank i use 500ppm.
because of the lubrication issue mentioned or because i'm out and the garage doesnt have 50ppm

just my 2cw the kzte engine is an "older technology engine" ie mechanical pump, non common rail, lower injector pressure. As such the sulphur content of the diesel doesnt make much difference apart from oil changes, but that being said it is an older technology diesel so should be serviced more regularly almost like the cruiser 1HZ engine that gets an oil change every 5000kms the na full service (oil and filter change every 10000km). the higher your injector pressure, the smaller the fuel droplets and thus the mre effective/cleaner the burn. older engines tend to create more soot than newer engines and this can contaminate the oil as well

sorry about the long windedness :oops: I did my final year thesis topic for mech engineering was diesel lubricity (smeering in AFR) and quality. :blackeye:

I have try and read a bit more on this issue and found that people have been experience drop in fuel economy when using 50ppm.What I also understands is if you do 5k oil changes than the 50ppm is not really better for your engine ,it is actually better for the environment.
Has anybody experience worse fuel economy when changed form 500 to 50ppm?

Up to Euro 3 spec engines can run on 500ppm , euro 4 spec engins will have a problem with 500ppm, if its 500ppm. The pdf filters will block up with higher sulfer diesel, but I believe our 500ppm is only 120ppm, so not so serious issue..

Hi Johan. What are you using and did you notice any difference between the 2

So what does the other KZ owners prefer?

Robert,

The Kz-TE has an electronic fuel pump.

Kz = engine model
T = Turbo
E = Electronic fuel pump

I bought my truck on 64000km - it was a farm bakkie, so presumedly it used farm fuel, which was 500 ppm.

Now standing over 371000 km(unopened engine) and 98% of fuel used was 500 ppm.

Now, is 500 ppm really that bad?

Oh, and the few tanks of 50 ppm used, then consumption was worse!

From what I've heard either is fine as long as the vehicle doesn't have a particulate filter.

Its only since 2006 that the sulphur content in diesel locally was set, I'm sure prior to that the levels could have been as high as 3000ppm :P

My cousin did use 50ppm in his 07 Polo TDi but reverted to 500ppm because it offers better fuel consumption and power, just keeps oil changes at every 5000km, which should be the norm on a car with more than 100k on the clocks

Currently in Europe the 5ppm is the standard and "zero" sulphur diesel is also available.

Glad to hear.Will also be sticking with 500ppm.

My 2c.
Toe esel ek "what will be, will be".

Yep, the same one the Good Lord has issued me at birth! :D:

And the truck is untouched mechanically, sans intercooler and chip!

AND it is my daily driver, making sure I put food on the table, carrying me, crea and equipment all over without any complaints!
