Towing Trailer and Fuel Consumptin

Post by Christian Kuun »

I was wondering what sort of a difference I can expect, in the fuel consumption of my 2.7i DC 4x4 (I normally average about 7.5km/l), when towing a regular 3mx1.5m trailer EMPTY. Why I am asking is because I now have to decide whether I am going to tow an empty trailer, which I can get for free, for the 2000km from Cape Town to Phalaborwa, or whether I am going to rent a 1way trailer up north for R1 200 odd rand. I need to lug a bunch of cr@p down to the cape. Basically I want to know whether it will cost me R1200 more in juice.

FWIW, I towed a 2ton Daimler Double 6 down in Dec, and with that m@erse big Double Axle trailer and the Daimler, my bakkie realized between 5 and 5.5km/l (towing 4th all the way).

Doubt that you will use that much more on juice .... just my thought .... guestimate you might use about an extra R800 on juice.

Like I said, it will be a 3mx1.5m....just a little heavier than a 6 voet Ventertjie. To rent one one-way costs R1200/compalsory 3 days and a R300 dep. I think I might just take the free one from here.

OK, here's the math:

Consumption (km/l): 7.50
Distance (km): 1900.00
Fuel (l): 253.33
Fuel cost (R/l): 10.00
Cost (R): 2533.33

Consumption (km/l): 7.00
Distance (km): 1900.00
Fuel (l): 271.43
Fuel cost (R/l): 10.00
Cost (R): 2714.29
Difference (R): 180.95

Consumption (km/l): 6.50
Distance (km): 1900.00
Fuel (l): 292.31
Fuel cost (R/l): 10.00
Cost (R): 2923.08
Difference (R): 389.74

Consumption (km/l): 6.00
Distance (km): 1900.00
Fuel (l): 316.67
Fuel cost (R/l): 10.00
Cost (R): 3166.67
Difference (R): 633.33

Consumption (km/l): 5.50
Distance (km): 1900.00
Fuel (l): 345.45
Fuel cost (R/l): 10.00
Cost (R): 3454.55
Difference (R): 921.21

Consumption (km/l): 5.00
Distance (km): 1900.00
Fuel (l): 380.00
Fuel cost (R/l): 10.00
Cost (R): 3800.00
Difference (R): 1266.67

Which means it will only be worth renting one if your consumption drops by 2.5 km/l or more, which I seriously doubt.
