Hectic

Post by Mud Dog »

For the past 35 minutes we have had an unabated torrential downpour associated with violent winds and electrical storming. If this continues, the recent flooding will be like child's play. Our pool overflowed within 10 mins (rose by 80mm). Already my entertainment area is about 12 inches under water .... never had that before. The overflowing sewerage IC that I had before was overflowing within minutes. My future SIL just phoned me now ... a dustbin floated past him in the main street on his way to work. Phone is ringing off the hook already with people having water running into their houses.

:shock2: :shock2: :shock2:

There was a warning on News24 yesterday about the storms that were expected to hit East London today. We are apparently expecting very cold weather today and tomorrow. So far it has been fairly cold ... as long as the wind doesn't blow.
Summer come on now. :beg:

It's just slacked off a bit ..... not a heavy downpour any more and I see the 'dams' all over our property are receeding. No damage that I am aware of so far Cassie, no leaks .... thank goodness. Ja Pieter, we're OK thanks .... the floor level of the house is fairly higher than the surrounding yard. :D:

No French drains .... all proper drainage (110mm ug pipes that culminate at a 250mm pipe which is supposed to carry mine and my neighbour's water off as well). It's always coped over the years ..... just not with the last two heavy rains.

A retaining wall collapsed up the road from us. It brought a 50cm wall of water down the road into our complex and through our houses. Busy cleaning at the momenty. Check the pictures on line. Slabs of ice in Vincent! Check dispatch online

As It turns out, I have suffered some damage ..... the weight of the water in a full gutter has torn a section of guttering away from the fascia. The fridge in the entertainment area seems to have taken a direct hit .... it normally stays on year round and the water must have got up to the electricals. Opened my workshops and the floor was swamped .... fortunately all power tools are stored on shelving but steel and timber materials will have suffered .... I just closed it and walked away. Only other thing that's on the floor is a gen-set, but it seems to be ok. Will wait for the rain to pass and empty the shop. :(
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Sorry to hear about this Andy, hope nothing too serious. We are still busy repairing the wooden river cottage as well, but fortunately the warping of the wood seems to have largely disappeared as the wood dried out again.

Shame, when I look around at some of the damage suffered by others, I think I got off lightly. The guttering took about 30 mins to repair .... the amount of materials lost wasn't too bad .... mostly shelving and boards of the chipboard type ... all the solid timber will survive .... some steel that was lying flat was cleaned off and oiled to prevent rusting. The fridge that took a direct hit was standing in about 12" of water was dried out, but the starter relay burned out but the compressor still runs. Now have to try find a replacement relay ...... not going to be easy for such an old fridge. It should be called a Hilux .... going on for almost 60 years now and the only thing it's ever needed was a thermostat replacement and a paint job.

Had a rivulet streaming around both sides of the house .... came through this gate, running continually at about 2 to 3 inches deep (the patterns in the sand and debris covering the paving can give some idea of the flow).

Leaves and debris built up against this gate where it would have flowed out but instead created a dam.

Most of the clean-up is done .... will carry on over the week-end where I get a chance. :eh:
