Best clutch kit to use?
My clutch is starting to shudder, and would like to replace it.
Which kit should i fit the Sachs, Valeo or OEM clutch kit ? So many choices and not enough knowledge.
Btw - what is the price to recon the gearbox, mine is starting to grind a bit too and hard to select gears when in 4x4

Re: Best clutch kit to use?
Sachs has my vote for the aftermarket kits :!:
LUK Repco would come in second
Valeo, personal choice not to use them. (never had good experiences)
OEM, you will probably find that they are made by Sachs or LUK anyway, and for the extra moola you will spend , is it really worth it

I've also heard good things about Sachs, I would definitely consider them. I don't know how the prices compare, though.

I have had very good experiances with Sachs although the LUK Repco is also very good.

After an hour, sitting, thinking of a response, I'm still left speachless ...........
Everybody always complains about the lack of over taking power of the Donkey diesels......... and everytime someone posted this, I couldn't understand where they were coming from....... well it's finally dawned on me.......
they were taking about it in theory........ practically, you don't have to be concerned about it at all............you never catch up to anyone to overtake them anyway..........
.......(and before I'm socked here, I am a die hard SFA fan, and a diesel one at that too)

Before overhauling the gearbox, first try replacing the gearbox and transfer case oil. A bad pressure plate not releasing properly when depressing the clutch will also cause stickiness and scratching when changing gears.

Re: Best clutch kit to use?
The guys with the big trucks use Sachs, must be a reason for that, agree with the others, Sachs, the LUK or Repco. If I can fit Sachs or LUK I will not even consider the OEM

Re: Best clutch kit to use?
My bakkie has done 316 000 km , there seems to be slight clutch shudder/slip. This is my first 4x4 and not sure if it is because of the heavy duty clutch or it is from wear .

Re: Best clutch kit to use?
Can be from wear. If the clutch plate is worn it can start to slip. Slipping clutch increase heat on pressure plate and flywheel. Excessive heat can cause hot spots on pressure plate and flywheel which cause certain areas to be harder than other areas which can cause the shudder. Do you know when last was the clutch replaced?

Re: Best clutch kit to use?
We run a Mercedes Benz work shop in Alberton And we fit about 5-6 clutches in customers cars a mounth and i would only recomend Sachs clutches provided you have your flywheel skimed. I have spoken to my g/box mechanic and he estemates around R3500.00 to do the box (parts + labour, and oil inc remove and repalce)Greenhorn wrote:My clutch is starting to shudder, and would like to replace it.

Re: Best clutch kit to use?
Hey Guys,
My bakkies Thrust / Release bearing is starting to complain. So I phoned Toyota yesterday to get a quote on the parts and . But not in the way you think. If you buy the parts seperately they charge you something like R4000. But then he said you can also buy a kit for about R900 . It is a localy produced kit but it carries Toyotas guarantee. So for the complete kit with all the oil seals (engine and gear box) and pilot bearing it will cost you about R1500. ('94 2.4 4x4)
Do you think this is a good price and that I should get that kit or spend the money on the original kit?

Re: Best clutch kit to use?
One of the strongest clutches out there is the Rolls Royce Silver Spirit II clutch for the limited edition stick shift racer. Only 600 were ever made, but the clutch is indestructable (2,000,000kms plus), and will fit in a Hilux box.
I am looking at getting one for the Supralux...
Only thing is that I first have to sell the Supralux to have enough money to buy the clutch...
:?

That is why it is advisable to compare prices as Toy is not normally known for trying to be the cheapest in the market

Re: Best clutch kit to use?
Sachs will get my vote. Speak to the guys at Star Brake and Clutch they are the distributers for Sachs in SA and you can buy directly from them. The have a branch in Pta West and their HO is in Edenvale. Just ask them if they have a heavy duty clutch for your application. My previous 2.7's clutch also shuddered and was replaced at about 60 000 Km's flywheel skimmed the works - still shuddered, was very disappointed. Then the gearbox was pulled at 100 0000 km's to convert the 2x4 to a 4x4 after 6 weeks and various excuses I told them just to put the box back because I decided to rather buy a 4x4 than convert. Ok getting to the point, I thought that while the box was out and stripped we can just as well check and replace what needs to be replaced, and skim the flywheel. The replacement clutch had 6 or 8 springs whereas the prevoius one had 4 if I remember correctly. No more shudder to this day, my brother in law bought the vehicle from me and it still feels like new.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I'm dreading the job of pulling out the gearbox.
IS this a whole weekends job and can you do it by yourself (two pair of hands, and tools)?

With my KZTE conversion it was about R4000 - R4500 from Toyota. And they dont sell a kit. Everything must be bought loose.

I'm avoiding doing it myself at all costs but I'll probably do it myself if I anybody can refer me to a descent workshop.... Just don't trust the guys. I'll take it to a workshop for other jobs but then I am able to inspect the work afterwords. With a clutch..... not inspection possible....

Their quote is the best and they use the Sachs kit
I'll probbly take my bakkie their end of the month and will report back on the service afterwards.
