Rust

Post by jontheron »

Hi everyone

It's been a while since iv been on the forum and feels even longer that I have taken gecky out to get dirty

Reason I'm posting is the cancer on my truck just keeps coming back . Mainly on the roof , I have been throwing a few ideas around for quite some time
1 replace the roof skin and rusted panels
2 make a fiberglass roof
3 Convert my hilux into a convertible rag top roof

I'm rely lost and don't know which direction to take . If i do all metal replacement she might rust again, if I do a fiberglass roof strength will be an issue and would have to have an external cage and same with the convertible rag top
I have never seen a convertible hilux so that is the one I'm leaning to words

Il post some pics of the unwanted corrosion shortly

Any advice would be much appreciated

+1

My previous Lux had something similar and driving on the beach saw no increase in rust over a period of about 13 years.
I did look after it and wash in fresh water after each trip and just a little Q20 after each trip on the two surface spots I had...
Now have the above mention model in my current vehicle...

I think the rust might be a bit to far for that device to work [FACE WITH STUCK-OUT TONGUE AND WINKING EYE]

You fix the rust then add the gadget to prevent the further spreading of the rust. It will not take the rust away & repaint the vehicle for you... :laugh2: :blackeye: :surrender:

Hennie in Heidelberg can fix that. He cuts out the rusted areas and replaces them with new plate. That is the only way you can beat rust. Not a lot of panelbeaters in gauteng capable of doing that.

That's the link with all the metalwork I did to my hilux
The confusing thing is I did tons of sheet metal work including the floor fire wall even the doors and the rust has only atacked the roof :wth:

Rust is metal Cancer & always comes back, so fix the Rust & fit the electronic Rust Protector to stop it from spreading or at least slows it down...

Where can a person get the roof and other panels from and how expensive are they? Can one also buy the front pillars?

Roger my previous 2,8 d had the same problem with the rails(among many other rust issues including the pillars etc). I had the roof area effected by rust cut out and sand blasted and had new rails bent up and welded into place.I must say the rails where still okay when I sold my trusted sfa about 7 months ago.
I also agree with Haboob as I knew his previous sfa and over the years I didn't see any visible spread of the dreaded cancer.
