handbrake at last

Post by Sven »

So after 7 years of making a plan without a handbrake i decided to get the rear brakes sorted. took all of 2 hours to replace drums and shoes and meticulously inspect the workshop manual for parts assembly, and noticed that the solid plate (with the odd bend with the short spring that sits between the handbrake lever plate and the brake shoe) was switched between left and right wheels, can't believe that it was all because of that that i never had a handbrake no matter how much adjusting i did. now the van hold on steep ups and downs like a charm

Properly set up the SFA handbrake works well. ;-)

The sfa uses different rear braking systems-make sure you get the correct workshop manual as parts differs

Hi Dawie,

just to check, are you talking about different SFA models using different brakes? because i did notice the manual i worked off showed dual return springs on the bottom but i only had single in my lux, although i have all the hooks for the second spring aswell.

Sven,
Yes there are two springs at the bottom. The one spring is a thick one and hook in the two big holes at the bottom of the brake shoes. The other spring is a thin one.The one hook of the thin spring hook in the same hole as the thick spring on the brake shoe and the other hook of the spring hook on n bracket more or less in the middle of the back plate.

The workshop manual you refer to is the same that I use on my bakkie. There are different types of brake systems on the sfa,s .Mine is an 1989 import (Botswana model)

Look at pic Br0126 in the workshop manual you refer to.It shows exactly where to hook that thin spring.

Awsome Dawie, thanks a lot, looks like I'm going to still have to source that second smaller spring, wasn't in my bakkie at all.

Thanks all I fixed it this morning but had to find out how to get the lug in the end had a spare and figured out that if you push the ratchet springs down it will move forward past the last notch.
