Hilux dethroned as top selling bakkie

Post by Rebel 4x4 »

Not surprising, Toyota has lost its identity and looks like a "mengelmoes" of everything else!

On paper you can tell me and show me the stats...The ranger has outsold the Hilux. .......but practically. ...and just read all the threads about the Ranger and understand and read the frustration that goes with owning a Ford...then I have to ask...are we missing something...

I suppose that what you get for taking your customers for the wee-wee. Not debating on which one will last longer but rather what the market wants and what sales are doing. I know 'ol Klipdrift van der Merwe, from Kliprand, will never drive anything other than a Hilux because nothing else will last 15 years and 500 000km over the harsh Namaqua terrain but truthfully, 'ol Klipdrif's once-in-15-year-purchase is NOT going to keep Toyota afloat and wont keep everything going right.

I saw this coming when we were shopping for a double-cab and the very obviously dated 'Lux just kept getting facelifts with figures representing the number of months it was losing on the competitors: Legend 40-months behind, Legend 45-months behind. I suppose sentiment is not everything anymore...... ;-)

Sales figures are often a mislead though as a LOT of sales go to rental fleets, mines, institutions like Eskom, Telkom etc. Even so, the wheel has turned. Lets hope Toy bring out a spiffy engine, a proper load capacity, proper towing capacity and un updated cab. Until Toyota come to the party, I will be enjoying my Frot. ;-)

On a side note- I joked on the Land Cruiser site about buying a Land Rover because.....and I listed a LOT of issues that we as Toyota supporters tend to either keep hush or ignore. I touched a few nerves but nobody could argue. Its always easier to fault the competitors but you should rather keep an eye on your preferred brands faults so that you can regularly confirm that it is still the best choice for you..... Hou die kop oop. Hierdie kompetisie is n goeie ding. BTW, wifes Frot has not given hassles yet....
