Steering rack change now Vasc light on

Post by bfgjohno »

Hi guys
Had to have my steering rack removed and serviced as seals were leaking. The garage have refitted the rack but now the "Vsc off" light and the skidding car light are on all the time.
Is there a something obvious they may have jiggered?
Cheers

It would seem that they've either damaged some wiring or neglected to re-connect a harness plug somewhere. AFAIK the "skidding car" is ABS and VSC is Vehicle stability Control, I think both pick-ups are at the hubs. Don't have that stuff on my older vehicles).
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

The steering angle sensor needs to be recalibrated . Yaw rate sensor tells ecu car is moving in a straight line while steering angle says the car is turning so all the lights will be on

Have you got air bags and or cruise control? if the weren't careful with re aligning the rack at the exact same place it may be that they damaged the spiral behind the steering wheel...

Hi Tarquin,
Funny you should say that...........
Yes we have cruise and airbags on the vehicle.
The Airbag light started coming off and on too. We took the hilux into a Toyota main dealer and they plugged it in. Apparently the spiral wire is gone and needs replacing. Can you give me any more detail on what it is/where it is and how it gets damaged. I suspect the local garage that changed the rack will say it must have broken in another way. Is that possible?
Cheers

When the steering rod was loosened the steering tends to spin around the top of the steeringwheel is heavier. The guy who installed it turned it the wrong way when installing it. The spiralcable has only 5 rotations lock to lock so the first time you turned up to lock the spiralcable snapped.Get the guys who repaired your steering rack to pay for the repair

They are saying that they placed the steering lock on and removed the key so it can't have been them. I say how else would it happen. We meet again when the replacement part comes through!

I made this exact mistake when fixing the steering column boot on my Vigo... happens to easily if you don't know about that spiral cable! BTW, it's very easy to replace, and the part cost me just over a grand.

In deep shock.
The local Toyota dealer has quoted £762. Of that £555+VAT is the spiral cable (Part number 84307-0K020)

That's a total rip! In SA it's just over R1000! What, that equates to like £20! Lol!

After battling with the dealer they have fitted a new spiral wire. Lights are still on. I suppose it needs recalibration. Is this easily doe? Are their instructions somewhere?
