i also got to 9, but by rethinking it, it should be 1. 2 x 3= 6 and 6/6 = 1

where is the math teachers? maybe i"m over thinking it? but i would read it as 6 devided by 2 times 1+2(wich in my oppinion should be done first) and that give you 2 times 3 = 6. then you devide 6 by 6 and the answer is 1.

Where is the math guru's?

in my opinion the answer would have been 9 if it was written : 6/2 x (1+2) = 9

There are 6 Mice, where always 2 mice become one pair. One pair gets 1 male mouse and 2 female mous offspring. How many offspring do all mice together have?
6 mice, 2 make a pair, so 6÷2=3. Offspring 1 male, 2 female (1+2)=3. 3*3=9

My rusty math skills remembers the following - you should always do the calculation in the brackets first - and then work from left to right - so that would be:

6 divided by (/) 2 times 3

So that is 6/2 is 3 and 3 x 3 is 9... :shock2:

Okay... according to me using math rules:

6/2(1+2) = z
6(1+2) = 2z Multiply by 2
(1+2) = 2z/6 Divide by 6
(1+2) = 1/3z
3=1/3z Multiply by 6
9=z

Volgens my is 9 meer reg as 1

Ek persoonlik maak oordentlik gebruik van hakkies juis om so iets te vermy. Kyk die verskil en hoe maklik weet mens nou:
(6/2)(1+2) en 6/(2(1+2))

Schooling these days is a crying shame.

I have to fork out big$$ every month for private schooling to teach my kids what I learned in an average run-of-the-mill government school!

God help the poor kids whose parents can"t afford to do that. a country is only as good as its education system.
I heard the minister of education on the radio this morning saying "why is it that SA does worse than any other African country with more resources?"

More corruption maybe???

I too came to 1 as the answer, but WolframAplha have decided it must be 9.

Best answer to the above and variations of this frustration as per the following website -

Quoted from http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/48293- I’m a math professor, and my view is that although the standard convention, if applied precisely and rigorously, does give an unambiguous procedure to follow, nobody, and that includes professional mathematicians, would ever write a formula like this.This is mostly because, after about 3rd grade, none of us ever use the division symbol ever again.
