Own Page
I had this mind shattering idea the other day:
Would it be possible to have our "own" page on the forum where each member are the only ones that can add info/pictures etc. In other words no one else can add comments but can access the page.
Maybe restrict it to members that have achived a certain number of posts.
This will be a nice place to just put pictures of our vehicles and of our trips etc. I know there are sub topics for this purpose, but sometimes it would be nice to just have your own page that we can add and remove the content as and when we feel.
Sometimes, due to the nature of forums, we start adding pictures or a trip report, then others add other comments and eventually these things are numerous pages long, then when you want to just read the trip report etc one has to sift through all the other comments over a number of pages to follow the original post.
Would this work?
Who would use it?
Good idea
Louzy Idea?

Just because it says "4WD" doesn't make it an off-road vehicle.

I created such a page for my Hilux - Personally I think this page would have been "dull" without the interaction from other members.

I hear you, but the use of this type of page would be your democratic right, not a rule.

Mark,
I was thinking of something more on the lines of Hilux Face Book, if that makes any sense.

Re: Own Page
Craig, am I right when I say you would want to start a thread in the open forum under the appropriate subforum, and then be able to lock it so that only you can add content to that thread?
Cassie knows more about the user rights/permissions and inner workings of the forum software, but I dont think the forum software is fancy enough to allow that (yet)..

Re: Own Page
I wouldn't go so far as to say 'Lousy' but I don't think it's good either. What would happen to the interaction (entertaining banter), the asking and answering of questions (tutorial value) about something that was posted? The sharing of information / assisting one another (which I consider to be one of the main functions of the forum) would be much less efficient and less personal.Mountain Man wrote:.

What we have works well enough amid a spirit of camaraderie that in itself is an attraction .... how would would we benefit by creating (im)personal cocoons/
What you're asking could be achieved with a "Photobucket" account with a link in your signature ... then anyone that's interested can go and view your pics / comments. Also not sure that the forum software allows for what you're suggesting to be created.

Craig it would be possible but the admin to give each person his own subforum might be a bit hectic.

Re: Own Page
I think it would become a bit messy with others opening new threads to reply to a post to which they would normally have just replied in the usual manner. It would also be problematic for Pieter when he updates the forum software as well, having to confirm that permissions are correctly set. It actually seems pretty pointless to me.

Re: Own Page
You could always ask the guys politely not comment on your personal private thread if you like. There's no guaranteed that it will work, but you can try. The problem is that such a thread will get lost in the "crowd" until you make a new post in it.

Re: Own Page
I will have to look if we can do this with forum permissions. I think it will mean we have to set the forum on each guy's topic manually and give only him posting right and read only rights to the rest of the world.

Re: Own Page
Craig, I can only create special permissions for a category not for a post
This is what I can do. I can create a special section for members' pages and explain the rules that you may not reply or post anything in any other member's post.
Then I start off by giving only you writing permission in that category and the rest of the members get read only access.
If somebody else is interested in his own page then I can add him to the group with such permissions but explain to him that if he post one comment in another guy's post we remove those privileges from him for the whole section. So he wont even be able to write in his own post.
I am sure that might work.
Should we give it a try?

Should we see how many people would potentially make use of this facility prior to going to great lengths to implement it?
Just because it says "4WD" doesn't make it an off-road vehicle.

I can understand why you would want this...
BUT... I enjoy the interaction and comments from others, so I don't think I would use it.
My vote: no.

I've created a voting poll at the top of the page so we can see if it warrants trying it out.

There is a solution to this, just start your own blog over at http://www.blogger.com.
It's your own page/site and you can do what you want with it!

Re: Own Page
im sure the admins of this website are allowed to create a Blog from the admin control panel
and also be able to bind it to the users account seeing as they use sql
i think what Mountain Man had in mind is similer to this blog

Re: Own Page
Thanks, will look into that. I did concider adding blog software looooong ago but then decided against it because we would then have to log into another place, BUT I did read the other day there is a way to led wordpress or phpbb take the login details from the other app's DB, so will look into it again

Jorge, I know Joomla has a lot of features and so on but some reason I just cannot get to like it.
Joomla is heavy on the resources and have big plugins.
I like Wordpress, they not as heavy on resources as Joomla and most plugins are free
I know there are super nice community plugins for Joomla
