Recovery gear storage

Post by GeorgeJvR »

Where do you hide / store your recovery gear, like the high lift jack ect?
Maybe the tailgate is an option?
Pics to follow shortly.

Hehehe ... just love your boldness for tackling that without a complete plan of action! But a seriously nifty idea!

Looking at it I would suggest to make a full sided lid with top lip and not just a top lid ... will help with access. Hinge it on the bottom with a stay as well so that if the gate is down it's easy to access and the lid stays open. You might have to move the tail gate chain mounts back a little if they foul.

Keep us posted! ;-)

George. That is a great idea. Having your recovery kit accessible in case of emergency is also very important. Now that youfigured that box out you can figure out how to make these work to secure the lid...

I was about to suggest those .... easy and quick, no loose bits to go missing, and the beauty is that they come in a whole range of sizes so you can get small ones.

P.S. You already have a side lip on your box so it's just a case of drilling holes to bolt then in and then corresponding holes in the lid. For hinges you can use a small "bullet hinge" that you just weld in. If you don't know them, ask your local hardware to show you what they look like ..... nice and neat and very sturdy. ;-)
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Make the box triangular so that when the tailgate is open, (with longer chains offcourse & if the towbar allows it) the top surface is still the same level & horisontal

Unfortunately I have a draw system that would clash and consequently want to put the hi-lift on the front bull bar. I think that I should formalise my recovery equipment in a similar fashion though...nice one.

The guys that know say you should not put it on the front bull bar - if you get into an accident, the jack becomes an extra projectile that could fly through the windscreen... :blackeye:

:problem: :wink2: :wink2:
