Greetings from USA
Hi folks, I found this site by searching for building information/ideas for my '84 Toyota regular cab. Right now it needs the engine rebuilt since it spun a bearing last month. I plan on doing a 20R/22R hybrid build; don't know if anyone has heard of that "over there". If I had the money I would swap in a 3.4 5VZ-FE V6 or the newer 3RZ 4 cylinder; but since I don't it's back to "cheap and easy" engine building.
Here's a few pictures/videos of what I have and where we go 'wheeling:

Hi and welcome Dan! Your machine looks 'rough and ready'!
The 20R is a very old motor and I assume it was also a cross-flow SOHC unit. I also assume that you would use the 22R sub assembly with the 20R head .... are they compatible? ... and what would be the benefit of such a hybrid? Why not just use a standard 22R or 22RE?

Re: Greetings from USA
The 20R cylinder head fits the "early" 22R block (up to 1984 year) and it has better airflow than the stock 22R intake. Something about the combustion chambers; I forget exactly. Depending on how it's built, it should bump up the compression ratio a bit for better top-end power. It's kind of common over here and there is a lot of information to sort out before I start on mine. It's absolutely going to get a better camshaft though; why build an engine with a lame cam?
Here's some reading material about it:
http://home.earthlink.net/~twopapa/info-2xr.htm

My truck has been beaten badly but hasn't left me stranded yet... well, before the engine died, that is. I like how you guys set up your rigs; looks like there's plenty of fun over there. I don't know if I'd take mine dune jumping though... 37" tires might get a little too airborne.

Re: Greetings from USA
Not so sure about the cam hey, Dan. A hot cam will def give you a better top end, but at the expense of low end power, which is where you need it when you're crawling .... unless you have crawler gears or dual / tripple x-fer boxes to bring the gearing down so that you can amble along at 2000rpm plus.

Re: Greetings from USA
I have 5.29 gears now and a single stock t-case; after the engine rebuild I'll start a dual-case setup with a 4.7 reduction gear to make it nice and slow.
The cams I've been looking at are around 261 degrees of duration and claim "low-end power" so we'll see who's telling the truth.
Are there different emblems for Toyotas over there? I'd like to get some different emblems for my truck after I repaint it. It's just getting basic black paint from the hardware store; no need to make it fancy since it'll be in the rocks a lot.

The standard 22R cam is 256° on both intake and exhaust, so 261° is no too wild .... should be OK.wakkjobb wrote:I have 5.29 gears now and a single stock t-case; after the engine rebuild I'll start a dual-case setup with a 4.7 reduction gear to make it nice and slow.

Re: Greetings from USA
It's been a little while and I have been busy, but not in the shop. We've been visiting family for Christmas and New Year's, and my brother-in-law had his 50th birthday last week in San Diego so we spent a few days out there.
Back to business! Before we left I tore apart both cylinder heads, measured everything and made too many lists of "Parts to Buy" for the hybrid. Tomorrow I am installing my bumper on another 4Runner; I am going to build a new square-tube bumper after the engine is done, I don't need the huge stinger in the way during engine work. Next week another local guy is coming by for some electrical work and I am first in line for his 37" tires when he gets a new set in a month or so. Hooray, free tires!
We will see what else happens; I'll start a hybrid build thread once I get more accurate information together.
Cheers!

I have been slowly working on the front suspension; started a new job back in January so my time for this project has decreased. I'll start a build thread instead of posting here; keeps it more organized I think.

Re: Greetings from USA
Welcome Dan...good looking Rig. Hope You are going to invest in a set of "Longfields" once the bigger meats get fitted, I broke more Birfs after installing the Marlin and bigger wheels than I care to remember......only blown 3 "Longs" and thats on 36" Simex's with a 4.3 V6 Chevy. Had a 22R in My rig and was going to fit a 21R hemispherical head to it with fuel injection but Chickened out and stuck the Chevy in rather......Good luck with Your build !
When You own a Rig as Beaten up as mine.....Any line is worth a try
