Good day
about a year ago i took my 2.4 sfa to my local mechanical workshop to have the motor overhauled as it had a pinion in the piston rattle.(gudget ? ).at that stage it did not use/leak any oil.
OIl consumption:
about 1000kms into it warranty i noticed the motor is using oil(not leaking).I took it back to the workshop and 3weeks later got it back( crack in the valve(hairline). At this time i also noticed that the vehicle struggles on the hills.(lack of power)eg.approaching plattekloof hill in 3rd gear.
what they did was oversized pistons rings bearings the whole nine yards.even replace my cylinder head with a brand new one.
Lack of power:
i cannot understand why she struggles on hills, being that the motor was redone, bored ,howned ect.she suppose to outrun my friends sfa on hills, but still stuggles to climb.
everytime i go on trails she uses oil.oil consumption is 400kms and then she empty(low level mark).
this being happening the past year as she is currently at the workshop for the 4th time and evertime the manager tells me that the motor is within specification.everytime they replace the valvestem seals whatever.the engineers had a look at it and still within spec.To me that means nothing because she is still using oil and lack of power.if the motor was bored, bigger pistons etc. she should not struggle on hills etc.
the long weekend we went camping at Leeuwensboschfontein.lack of power and still consuming oil.on top of that the fuel consumption went double. 4,3kms per litre.
please help with advice as i spend plenty money on the motor & replacing the cylinder head.
she is currently at the workshop and is hoping to get her before the atlantis gathering.
raad op & gatvol.

Re: help(advice) - SFA -oil consumption;lack of power
Deon,
I would suspect the bottom end of the motor. Toyota engines are not very likeable to being rebored. I had a 1.6 Corolla and the motor was rebored. It used to give small puffs of smoke when I drove it hard and after the engine rebuild the motor was noisier than what it was. Also noticed that after reboring the engine it was feeling the same as afterwards.
So I would suspect that they rebored it, honed it and somewhere along the line the clearence of the oil ring end gap is not inspec.
If you are using a 500ml per 1000 km it is accpeted in the motor industry as normal. However if you have to add 1 lt Full to low mark ( i think) on 400 km there is a problem. Valve stem seals only do so much for oil consumption & smoking.
Also the lack of power might be to incorrect cam timing (possibly 1 - 2 tooth out) and even slightly lower compression in the engine due to low quality parts used and the fact that the rings are not seating as they should.
I my opinion it should be re opened the engine, and re measured, front to back everything and then see where the problem originates from.

Deon... maybe you should take it to a different workshop cause it seems the one you are taking it too now ....
Maybe try AWE (allan Hoppy).... he knows what he is doing

I would love to take it to Allan, but the motor is still under warranty and would risk it.spend already plenty mulla.
@ Johan, i also scheme that they should re-open the motor & redo, but they keep on patching.and ill keep on returning.

Deon, have you considered involving the Motor industry ombudsman & the RMI??? Surely they will assist you with finding a reasonable solution to the problem.

Re: help(advice) - SFA -oil consumption;lack of power
Deon, I've been down this road... what happened in my case was the engine was rebuilt by a trainee(I think) at a professional outfit(Goch & Cooper), anybody can build a 4Y you know... ja right... in my case the engine was also totally rebuit, bored out, new pistons+rings, new head, new valves+seats... everything redone... from day 1 there was a lack of power... etc... I took it back, they said the carb is stuffed, hence no power... I took it to Allan for a second opinion, he took it for a spin, before we even left the parking lot, he said the valve timing was out... opened the timing cover... and it was out not 1 but 2 teeth... but but... due to the engine not running in properly(under power) all the cylinders were glazed over... hence the horrible oil consumption, was using around 1L per 1000km... in my case I decided to redo the job myself, with Allan's guidance, on opening the motor, the rings were incorrectly installed and the cam lobes were damaged(wrong valve springs+elcheapo lifters)... fact is that alot of so called professionals use cheap parts to maximise profit...
My advise... get a 2nd opinion from a Hilux specialist like Allan! Then you got some facts to take back to the engine builder!

Thanks Mr.B ,will do that when I get her back.I will relay this very important info to the manager and see what he got to say.if the problem still persist then i will contact the motor industry ombudsman.
