8mm will be fine. Just take care when bending the plates... Otherwise you could use straight plates and spacers...

If you're planning on going with shackles that long then I would definately cross brace the shackles. In front be careful that under compression the shackle does not bind on the chassis rail...

Straght plates and spacers? Are you talking for the front ones with the bends?
Cross brace...for the rear? Explain to me nice and slow please....soos die leeu loop, stap vir stap

The front one with the bends. you can either bend the plates as per the original or you can use straight plates with spacers on the spring end to take up the width difference.

At the length's you're talking about I would cross brace both the front and rear. It should help keep the vehicle more stable and lessens the stress on the shackles...

Die langer scakles werk baie goed ek het dit ook gedoen maar dan moet die propshalfts ook bietjie langer gemaak word veral die voorste een ander wear die splines vinnig uit want dit werk op minder.

I meant to add, be careful of too long a shackle. AFAIK the ideal shackle angle is about 45 degrees. Too gratan agel and the spring rate starts to get very stiff ( and no droop ), too small an angle and the spring rate becomes very soft ( and no compression ).

There's also one other little catch, and that's the castor angle of the front axle. If the shackles are too long you'll tilt the axle 'back' and run the risk of death wobble, and other odd steering issues....

Scissor shackles are fine for a offroad only vehicle, and even then I've heard horrible stories of them 'unloading' on side slopes.

One option is it use the revolver part of the shackle without the 'scissor' section, this allows the spring to twist under articulation. IIRC Pype and Syron Conversions have scissor shackles fitted...

Those revolving shackles look neat,I have not seen them over here unless someone has imported them. And as far as i am aware they don't affect normal driving use.

Johnathan, Adding between 50 & 80mm to the shackle length should have no significant affect on either the angle that the shackle hangs, nor the kingpin inclination of the front axle. I doubt it will even make as much as a ½° difference in the castor. I would imagine that more pressing issues would be the need to fit an adjustable torque rod and lengthen the front propshaft. The rear should be OK because the swing arcs are similar, but the front swing arcs are opposing, requiring more travel on the slip joint splines.

The shackles measure from top to bottom 240mm, while the actual distance between the bolts is 165mm. I can also adjust them one notch higher or one notch lower, if desired.
