VW gears grating

i know this isnt a hilux, but need help to try sort out a problem i have with a VW Mk1 golf 1.3 4speed.

I do have some difficulty sometimes changing gears - hard to push into gear - and also it grates almost everytime i change into 3rd and 4th gear.

1st, 2nd and reverse gears are fine.

i think it might be the gear linkages, but have no clue how to check them and for what and how to adjust if possible.

All advice (except burning the golf) will be greatly appreciated.

Take the vehicle to Allan(Hoppy)... he is in Brackenfell... if the gearbox is worn beyond repair, I would think a mk1 golf GB can't be that expensive to replace...

i'm taking the Hilux to him either this Friday or the next for its service (and possibly a suspension tweak ) and will get his input.
