Hilux moving to another island. What to bring?
I'll be moving to one of the smaller islands here in the Philippines and I'm taking my Hilux with me. I won't have access to a Toyota parts dealer other than maybe every other year when I'm back in one of the larger cities here. I'll be on my own when it comes to maintenance since there are no Toyota Service Centers on the island I'm going to, and it will be quite costly to put the truck back on the ferry to take it to the main island.
I'm thinking of bringing with me:
• Air filters
Oil filters
Fuel filters
Pack of spare fuses
So, what else would you bring?

Fan belts / timing belt (if it's close to due for replacement). Service parts like plugs (if it's petrol), oil, anti-freeze etc should be available at most spare outlets.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

The truck has less than 1,000 kms on it. It's still new. But a spare fan belt would be good.
I think the regular consumables like oil and anti-freeze are available there. It's the Genuine Toyota stuff that I'm concerned about.

Only 1000 km - then you shouldn't be needing anything for quite a while. If you do take a fan belt (for"just in case"), chances are that you won't be needing it for a few years, so keep it sealed a packed away where it won't get hard and perished.

True. The fan belt will just be in case of that one unlucky chance the original belt fail and are placement one is nowhere to be found on the island.

On a serious note the only items you might be needing are filters depending on how dusty the environment is and how clean the diesel is.

I'm guessing it will be low so I'll probably hit the six month intervals instead of the mileage.Thabogrobler wrote:I guess the yearly mileage will not be high?

Yea. Oil, air and fuel filters.Mars wrote:On a serious note the only items you might be needing are filters depending on how dusty the environment is and how clean the diesel is.
Plus.... Extra fuses and a fan belt. I think those about cover the more common things I'll encounter.
Brake shoes and pads will come much later.
Thanks everyone!

The booklet I got from Toyota shows Engine Oil and Filter need replacing every six months or 10,000 kilometers. I suspect I'll get to the six month point before 10,000 kilometers.

Belts actually have a shelf life. Even if you seal it nicely and store it correctly. I would rather buy it when you need it.Mud Dog wrote:Only 1000 km - then you shouldn't be needing anything for quite a while. Re: Hilux moving to another island. What to bring?
I am aware of the shelf life aspect, which is why I mentioned proper storage to help prolong it, but the reason why I said to include it as a back-up is that it's a specific item which may not be readily available in the event of unexpected / premature failure of the current one. I've on a few occasions come across relatively new belts that have by some strange quirk of chance picked up a small stone between the belt and pulley, causing it to fail. This is admittedly more common with rear engine vehicles like VW Combi's and Beatles, also more common with "V" belts than flat. A belly plate helps to prevent this, but there's still a small chance of it happening - don't know if Renan's vehicle has such a plate and how much gravel / off-road driving he will be doing.

Re: Hilux moving to another island. What to bring?
Considering its easy to store a spare fan belt in a drawer, I see it as a good thing to have. Even if ages a bit before I use it, it will at least get me going again till I can get a fresh one.
I will be driving on some dirt roads on a regular basis. I don't believe I have a belly plate. Just the factory skid plate towards the front of the engine.
