2001 Hilux KZ-TE DC 4x4 - secondhand price?

Post by Hannes Thirion »

I need some advice from the forum.
I am about ready to sell my 2001 Hilux KZ-TE DC 4x4.
It have 283k km on the clock and as far as I know there is mechanically nothing wrong with it.
I know that the book value of Hilux's and Cruisers are nothing to go by for secondhand value on the one hand and that Auto Trader prices may be a bit on the high end.
If I take those two extremes I would say that it should go somewhere between R80k and R120k?
I have already bought a 2004 KZ with 90k km and moved my alu-cab, roofrack and dual battery system over to the newer vehicle.
I am selling the 2001 model with nearly no extras. Only an extra rear blade spring on each side, Monroe Magnum Gas shocks and load bars on the cab and two Hilux Raider spare wheels. All tyres (BFG A/T) have +-60% thread left.
I bought it in 2004 with 120k km on the clock and serviced it myself by draining oil every 5k km and oil and filters every 10k km. Also grease every 10k km. I have replaced the cambelt recently for the second time. Still have to reset the light.
Apart from that I have replaced all the wheel bearings before they need replacement at about 200k km.
I let it idle to let the temp go down to below 200 deg C before switching off and as a rule try not to go over 3000 rpm.
I intended to drive it for many more years but then a friend of mine advertised his 2004 Hilux and I went for it.
What would be a reasonable price for this vehicle?
There is already one person who is interested in buying it and I have not advertised it yet.

Hannes

I've just sold my 2005 2.7i 4x4 D/C Legend 35 for R130k with 220k on the clock. I could have probably got more if I was patient, but I got tired of dealing with people who didn't have cash. The problem with our older cars is the bank makes it difficult to finance them so you need to find someone with 150k spare. I think a KZTE will be easier to sell, because people are scared of the 2.7i's petrol consumption at 5km/I. On the other hand, engine failure on a KZTE could cost you an arm and a leg.

The company I work for pays my petrol so I'm not too worried about getting 12l/100km on the FJ, 200kW of ugly power is awesome.

Good luck with the sale, I still miss my 2.7i
