Fitting fuel gauge with reserve light

Post by Opsmedic »

Hi All

My 2001 IFS does not have a reserve light on the fuel gauge. How much hassle will it be to fit a later model gauge? Will I have to replace the sender unit on the tank as well?

Cheers
Dave

Normally the sender and instrument are designed to work as a pair. One way to find out is to check if the sender unit in the tank has the same part number for the older and newer model lux. The other is to replace the guage and see if it works. Just remember to accurately log the distance travelled on the tank so that you don't end up with a problem. I once changed the whole instrument cluster on a VW fox that I owned where the senders were actually the same but I had to get to know how the new guage read as it was slightly different.

I have the same situation. The legwork I did also lead me to believe that there is a sender unit with the "trigger" for the fuel low light, which I would imagine, is an extra wire that would feed the fuel low light on the dash, once the level is reached.

It would make sense then that one would have to replace the gauge and the sender unit as a pair (and hope that the loom makes provision for this!)
