A friend has an Opel with 105k km's on the clock, only due for service in about 5000 k's. In the morning it only starts when petrol pedal is depressed and idles irratic, but once engine is warm after about 5 mins idling comes right and no hassles after that. Has anyone has any knowledge what it could be or know a Opel mechie in the East Rand area?

Most of these "modern" cars have rather complex vacuum tube systems (If I can call it that). i.e. lots of little tubes going to all kinds of little valves. I have found on cars that are getting a little older that those tubes start perishing or are damaged by technicians when servicing the car and those vauum leaks can cause erratic idling etc. It is very quick and easy to simply check all those vaccum hoses and to replace those that look suspect.
I have had three cars where replacing these tubes made a huge difference.
It sounds like it has something to do with the cold idle setup - could even have to do with the air flow sensor related.

Try cleaning the idle control sensor aswell with carb cleaner had the same issue on a gsi corsa cleaned the idle control vlavle and problem dissapeared definatly a problem with vacuum and idling sensors.
Usually near the throttle body dont now where the opel essentia one sits but asume it would be the same place
Refer to pic A and B below A shows approximate position of sensors just note this may change due to model and engine.
B depicts the sensor you are looking for it will have a cable plugged into it and the senor is fixed under the throttle body just check the part where the connector gets plugged into is the only part you will see
