Where to fit a fire extinguisher

Post by Dingo »

Hi Guys

who carries fire extinguishers with them and were in your Lux have you fitted it.

We had an incident on saturday where one of the cars with us caught fire, nobody (incl me ) had a fire extinguisher.

So I bought one yesterday and am not sure where the best place is to fit it in my Lux. Obviously one needs it to be easily and quickly accessable, but out of the way.

Any ideas.

I thought just under the drivers seat, or just under the rear seat in the middle on the tunnel

You have to mount it where you can reach it easily. Saying that, you also have to secure it so that it will remain in place should your vehicle be in an accident or you roll over as a flying extinguisher will kill you.

I have two in my truck. One between my seat and the door. It is held firmly in place by die door when closed. I have a second larger extinguisher in the corner beteen the back seat and the C-pilar.

Scott, anywhere you would have easy access to the unit in need of use.

I have one under my drivers seat and one in the canopy

I have a Fire Striker in each of the front door pockets of the vehicle, and a 1.5kg powder extinguisher mounted in the rear of the canopy, within easy reach in case of emergency.

As the guys say, accessable, and secure is key.

Mine also sits here, another one by the passenger side next to the small stick. 3rd one mounted on the load bars, ease of access in case truck is locked and keys are not nearby.

Some nice ideas, thanx Guys.

i also like the Firesryker idea, they seem to be small, just as effective, can fit somewhere without taking up to much space.

I have actually seen THREE vehicle fires !

one was on the coastal road outside Gordons bay - sedan that burnt out.

another was also a sedan - an elderly gentleman, his well looked after car burnt to a crisp at the robot ....

then outside Keimoes I saw a truck burning ... the driver emptied his extinguisher, but that did NOT stop the fire ,,,, we then drove into twon to summon some help.

We now have a 2,5kg unit in our Hilux. Securely strapped in the back.

Pity it seems the old metal brackets are no longer available. Very difficult to now securely strap down an extinguisher.

Just pleeease remember one thing... That fire extinguisher holds a mean little weight, and in an accident becomes a missile.

One of my previous vehicles was a Land Rover Discovery and I had a fire extinguisher BOLTED to the back door. SWAMBO was involved in a head on accident and the fire extinguisher and bracket broke off the back door and shot through the front windscreen like a gun shot, missing her head by about an inch. It left the Disco with so much force that it sailed over the accident scene and landed some 50 meters further down the road, causing it to burst and spray everywhere.

Mike

that is certianly my concern, the possibility of getting hurt by the fire extinguisher rather than the accident. For this reason, I'm thinking the firesryker is the better option albiet slightly expensive.

the extinguisher that I bought on the weekend will find place in the canopy.

I also have the Firesrykers, one in the pocket of my seat cover & the second one in the canopy.
Fire extinguishes expire & need to be refilled about every two years or so, but the fire strykers do not have an expiry date, which was a selling point for me. :blushing:
