Ride On Tyre Protection

Post by Irishman »

Has anyone tried this stuff. If it works it is the thing for overlanders, or your ordinary car. I always have the fear of a puncture, deliberately caused or not, when passing an informal settlement, or on a dangerous corner. On the web site www.ride-on.co.za it sounds great, but there is no mention of price :silent: Bridgestone make a tyre that can carry on for 80k,s after a puncture

Yes, Ron. This stuff has been around for a very long time under various brand names. One of my clients used to market this stuff in the early '90's by having an inflated tyre on a rim which was treated with this filling. The tyre would be on the lawn in front of his premises and he would pop a couple 9mm rounds through the tyre which sealed almost immediately, as a demo to customers.

I had all my vehicles treated at the time but although it works, it's over-rated and I still lost tyres with side-wall lacerations. When the stuff had been in there for a while it tended to 'dry out' and became less effective.

A gimmick in my opinion, not to be relied upon, and not suitable for off-road type sidewall damage. :problem:

At that time we were not told about the sidewall problem. In fact the demo was a shot through the sidewall and the tyre was thereafter rotated in such a way as to get the stuff to the 'wound'. Also a pistol shot leaves a small hole whereas sharp rocks / edges lacerate a tyre and the laceration flexes too much to be able to seal. IIRC the cost was in the region of R25 per tyre at that time.
There was later a over the counter cannister version that you could buy, called "Slime". Worked in the same way with the same limitations.
