Hello all,
I own a 2011 Hilux SR5 double cab. 316000 kms. Serviced every 10000kms. Runs like a dream. Lately I have noticed a thud coming from what SEEMS like the front of the vehicle when letting the clutch out from a dead stop. It seems like something is shifting or moving once load is applied. Just a single deep thud. I have had it on a hoist twice now. Checked all obvious bushes gearbox bolts engine mounts suspension etc. no one can seem to find anything apparent. It only occurs after I have braked to a full stop, then go again. The more load I put through the engine the more severe it is (although it is quite soft). Anyone had any experience with anything similar? Thanks so much in advance. Benny.

Actually that would make sense because when I when for a warrant of fitness (Im from NZ) the other day, the guy showed me that when he spun the rear wheel there was rumbling through the diff, suggesting something going on in there? Is that able to be adjusted out if there is any play? Or is that replacement? Thanks mate.

Grab the pinion where it goes into the diff housing and try move it around - it should have little (0.5mm or so) to no movement side to side. Check the front as well if you use 4x4 a lot.

Re: Thud when letting clutch out from stopped
If it is play in the pinon and crown wheel, than some can be taken up by tightening the pinion drive flange nut, but only to a point and there after, it is time for a new pinion gear
Happy trails

Check your propshaft center bearing / cushion it is very probably soft and jumping up and hitting the member it is secured to when you let your clutch out.

To answer your question there is no adjustment on a diff that would resolve your problem, any adjustments in a diff are done on assembly or overhaul and that is the end of it. Before you attach the diff check that center bearing and rubber cushion it could very well be your problem

Before doing anything expensive check your universals on your prop shaft.
