Prado 90 vs 120?
Hi all
Am reading a lot about the Prado 90 and 95 on the threads. They are great vehicles I'm told (comfortable, great ride and plenty power). Have always liked the look.
It's a 3.4 V6 right? So how does it compare to the Prado 120 4L V6?
Any thoughts and comparisons please?
Thanks

Re: Prado 90 vs 120?
As usual depends on what you want to do with it.
If I had to choose I will go for the 90, but then somebody else would like the more modern looks and comfort of the 120.
One of my suppliers had a 90, bought a 120 and is seriously looking at selling the 120 to get a 90 again.

Thanks Pieter
It's going to be mainly town and the occasional out of country over landing.
Am also a fisherman and enjoy going to the hard to reach places in SA.
But there is also the SWAMBO factor and that is all about comfort you know.
There aren't any trails involved in this decision.
There is an obvious price difference, and it sounds like the consumption is about the same depending on who is driving...
I don't have such a heavy foot, so that should be ok.

Re: Prado 90 vs 120?
HI Nick,
The 90 and the 120 has both its great points and both are very capable offroad.
The one thing I wish the 90 model had was the twin tank setup like the 120. However the chassis has got the brackets in place and a 70L tank can be mounted increasing tank volume to 160L total.
The 3.4 cannot match the 4.0LV6 in power and torque or outright perfromance, but that said the 3.4 is powerful enough to stay comfortable at speeds above the legal limit with ease which should be more than enough.
The 90 series with rear difflock has got the edge when it comes to offroading in my view as the standard specs of the angles on the vehicle is the best of the range to date.
Here is a brief confession about about why I bought my Prado. http://hilux4x4.co.za/views/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=38506
In here you will see the angles mentioned but ill post it here for reference also.
Approach angle - 95 Series (36) 120 reeks (34) en die 150 reeks is (32).
Departure Angle - 95 Series (30) 120 reeks (28) en die 150 reeks is (24).
Break over angle - 95 Series (28) 120 reeks (20) en die 150 reeks is (22).
All the angles are measured in degrees.
I have driven 3x times long distance a 4.0L prado and they are awesom, i could just not afford one yet so I opted for the 3.4V6 model. Would I swop it, i doubt it really as they are more nimble off road and still is a very comfy lounge to cruise around in...
The 120 has more rear leg room, however I can sit comfy behind myself in my own Prado with the driver seat set for me, bear in mind I stretch the tape to 1.93m.
In my view it comes down to budget and what you want from the vehicle. If I was in a position to buy a 4.0l first time before buying it, I would have done it, but I havent regret driving and owning my 2000 model. Its still a stunner and really goes well even nearing the 290K mark it runs like new. I personally have noticed that the 90 series is not as available in the market as the 120 series which make it in a way a kind of cult SUV as the most older SUV's from that time on the road is either the Pajero or the Discovery II range. Both sold a lot compared to the Prado so i'll keep my 90 series and be different..

Re: Prado 90 vs 120?
Thank you. This answers my curiosity very well.
Was very tempted with the 90 for a long time (there are a few for sale on the forum), but am fortunate to be able to get the 120 at a good deal.
Also it looks and feels slightly newer inside and there is that SWAMBO factor as mentioned previously.
The roll angle doesn't worry me to much at this point as this is not going too be a trail vehicle, more over landing.
But it is good to know, even over landing can have very difficult terrain so thank you for that.
Will post a pic when it comes time to collect it....hopefully soon.
Thanks for the insight guys.

Congrats Nick. You will not regret it. I've also recently purchased a 120 and absolutely loving it. The power is awesome and ride comfort is phenomenal. Fuel consumption is the only downside though.... Very difficult not to have a heavy foot once you've felt those horses (twisted)

Re: Prado 90 vs 120?
my neighbour has the Prado 120 diesel.
STUNNING "car" !!
Lots of space ! Two adults can still squeeze into the back seat with the baby seat in place. So if you are in that phase of your life it certainly is an option.
His is stock standard. During our trip to Gifberg I idled along in the Hilux - with a slight lift and Iron Man suspension. Couple of places I had to choose my lines carefully, but no more than a grade 3+ trail. He got one line slightly wrong, slid side ways, stuffed the side step and hung up the Prado. We had to do a reverse recovery .....
NOT saying it is a bad vehicle !!!!!!!!!!!!
This was just a strong reminder that in standard trim it is not a hard core off roader .... add some rock sliders and maybe lift it slightly. OR, get your lines 100% ! :)
all said, BRILLIANT vehicle !!!!!!!!!

Re: Prado 90 vs 120?
Shame man poor guy.
This one came with a dual battery system, TJM front replacement bumper with recovery points at the back on the standard bumper.
Roof rack also with hi-lift jack. So a little help is already there for me.
Want to upgrade the roof rack from the current 3/4 to the longer one so have put pictures up already.
Still deciding if it should be the rear bumper first or the suspension lift.
There was an interesting thread on the top 10 mods in order.
Will refer back to it when the financing starts to come in again.
So right now it's town driving and it's just great!
