Morning All
Does it make any difference whether a snorkel’s intake is pointing forward or to the rear? The reason for my question is the amount of dirt and dust I removed from the air filter. Somehow my logic tells me that facing backwards may suck in less crap than facing forward. Any thoughts on that?
Cheers
Dave

Re: Snorkel Intake
You can make it face backwards, no problem at all, in some country's where there is a lot of rain they also turn it backwards, also when driving in a convoy on a dirt road.

Re: Snorkel Intake
David I have been playing with this for some time, even tried a cyclone head ontop of the snorkel.
The "ram effect" you get when the snorkel head faces forward is minimal at best, totally negligable at off road speeds.
Thus on Hilux the snorkel head faces FORWARD when on tar.
Part of deflating the tires is to unscrew the hoseclamp on the snorkel head and to turn it BACK. It takes longer to take out the Leatherman than to actually turn the snorkel head back.
The cyclone head experiment was not a raging success. Maybe it does clean the air "a bit", but the unit is so heavy that you SEE the whole snorkel shaking on currugated surfaces !!
I am contemplating another experiement. Have you seen the thin songe air filters on a motorcycle, that gets dampened with a few drops of oil to trap the dirt ? I want to make a "housing" for such a sponge at the inlet to the snorkel head .....

Re: Snorkel Intake
Chris, I think all you will achieve with this is to restrict the airflow, and when it starts getting dirty it will choke even more. Consider the small surface area of such a sponge and compare it to the surface area of the Donaldson filter ..... The airspeed through that sponge will be 18 or 20 times that through the Donalson at a guess. That motor will be sucking hard, and if you're going to affect the performance and fuel economy adversely.I am contemplating another experiement. Ooops I omitted the words "less than" ...... should read "airspeed through that sponge will be 18 or 20 times less than that through the Donalson at a guess."
Thanks!
Thanks!

I agree with Mud.....
I used to race off road 1/8 scale gas buggie
we would fit an outer foam filter over the original foam filter due to having to change the filter half way through a race.
All we did was pit for fuel and the pit crue would pull the outside filter off half way through the race. this gave us full performance throughout the race where the guys who didn't do it this way started loosing power with each lap.
What i have seen is guys with cooking hob filter material in different layers in a special machined top for the snorkle...... dont know how well this would work as its still restricting the airflow.......
Just my 2c worth...
