Road from Savuti to Ngepi

Post by PieterG »

Hi Guys,

I need some help. Has any of you used the road from Savuti to Ngepi on the Western Side of the swamp in the last year or so?

We are planning a trip to the area in June/July 2012 and would like to take on that road but need to plan, could we do the 300km in one day or do we have sleep over some where.

Your advise will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Pieter.

Hallo Pieter,

If you are reffering to the road leading west from Savute to Muhembo following the Delta's outline I would not personally reccommend this route as it is usually very overgrown and also you will have to content with high grass which can hamper visibility.

Secondly as you are travelling after the rains you might encounter still very deep sections of water crossings and/or deep sticky cotton soil mud.

If you wanna go this route, I will say plan ahead to sleep over as 300 km on this route is going to be really tough on the vehicle;s not mentioning the driver and passengers.

It can be done, but you have to be very thorough with you preparations and also you need to plan to be able to turn around at any pooint and go back if the road becomes impassable.

How many Vehicles are going?

Why not going south via Maun & Lake Ngami and then also visit Tsodillo hills instead. Savute camp to Etsha is drivable in one day provided the road is dry leading out from Savute south to Maun.

Thank you very much Johan.

We will be 6 to 8 vehicles, but all are novices when it comes to long overlanding trips. I think we will take your advise and go the other way around.

When we have more experience we will try that route.

PeterG. just make sure you have a snorkel when crossing some of those rivers, it can become pretty scary at times
