Commercial's 4y

Post by Jaco Versfeld »

I just popped in Commercial. See they have new stock - I had quite a scare the other day when the floor was empty ...

New 4YPs are R500 cheaper than what I bought mine for.

Mine is still going strong at approx 2000 kms, just very thirsty at this stage

The 4YP (partial - only sump, block and top(??)) is going for R5500, the 4Y (with alternator, fan, starter, carb, etc) is going for R8950.

W00t!!!
That's cheap
I have to replace my head (head on 4y I mean) when I removed the head the first time, I saw the previous owner replaced only the number 4 piston. And thats not something I like. If you have to work on one, U might aswell do all of them.
So its either, replace head and do all the pistons or go commercial.

That's good to hear :!:

Cape Town was empty last time I visited :(

My 4YP is just clocking up 15,000kms; hasn't used 1 drop of oil and is going like a Boeing

Hi Arno,

'n 4y hou seker so 400 000 km.

2: Big-end bearings
3: Full gasket set (sal payen werk op toyota)
4: Olie pomp
5: Engineering (blok en head)
6: Bietjie Koffie
7: Baie geduld

My Pa het my geleer as jy die enjin oordoen doen jy alles, waterpomp en oliepomp ingesluit.

Sal gou waterpomp en clutch by my lysie sit.

Somehow I don't like this idea... 50ml sounds like alot!

Hannes, have the flywheel skimmed, if u are going to all the effort of a rebuild, have the parts balanced before assembly, a standard 4Y is a pretty unbalanced machine, they benefit from balancing quite a bit! Then while the engine is out, check the condition of the spigot shaft seal on the gearbox, if there are any signs of leaking/sweating, replace it... it's pretty cheap for the orginal from Toy .. while replacing make sure you put the new one in the right way around(like the one in place now)... I've made that mistake once before... buy and install an original Toy rear main seal(and crank shaft seal), the pirate ones very often don't last more than 1500km... and if the pirate one goes then you going to have to pull the motor again!(again I've been there done that... learnt my lesson)

In all honesty, I think it would work out cheaper to buy a new Commercial 4Y engine. Remember, the head will probably be re-skimmed again and the block re-bored. Once you've done all this and fitted new bearings, pistons, rings, oil pump, water pump, gasket set (Payen is excellent), valve seats etc you're not too far from a new engine's price anyhow. It actually cost me R1000 more to re-con my original 4Y than a brand new Korean 4Y cost at the time. In the end though, I ended up fitting the new 4Y and also rebuilding the original engine as well.
