1988 Hilux 2.2 4x4 Long Wheel base price?

Post by farrelc »

Hi,

I inherited my grandfather's 1988 Hilux 2.2 4x4 Long Wheelbase with canopy 5yrs ago. He was the original owner and the bakkie has done 185000kms. The vehicle was destined for the Saldanha Iron Ore jetty in 1988, but the contract was cancelled with Toyota and Hugo and Hugo Vredenburg sold it to my grandfather. The vehicle was factory powder coated by Toyota and in its original condition, except for larger tyres. The body and internals are in excellent condition. Drives very nicely and the gearbox is super smooth.

When I take it out for a drive once every 6 months, I get stopped at traffic lights or shopping parking lots and people ask me if I want to sell it. Never experienced something like this with a vehicle. Maybe Im missing something.

My question is, how much is a bakkie like this worth to the right collector?
I would like to sell it, but don't want to hear afterwards I gave it away at a bargain, as this vehicle has sentimental value to us, but unfortunately, it's standing in the garage taking up space and eventually need to let it go.

Please see the photo attached.

Hi Farrel,

Welcome to the forum.

Anything is worth what a buyer is willing to pay.

My guess would be at least R125 000 but to the right buyer maybe 150-180? You never know.

Man, I must say I am very glad that this car never went to the jetty!

Mint condition, original single cabs are becoming very, very rare. Most were driven to death. A friend of mine paid around R140k for a fully rebuilt one.
Happy trails

That is a great bakkie, with very low-mileage as well. Personally, I would never sell it, ever! It's value will increase every year. I have a 1987 SFA DC and get asked the same question - but "No Sirree, it ain't for sale"!

Nothing less than R125k. Start on R180k (or less) and test the market, if you do not get a response within a week gradually start reducing your price. Depending on how desperate you are to sell. In the end I think you might settle on R140k but you never know, maybe someone is willing to pay more.
