engine idles ok but when driving engine backfires and loss of power

Hi All
I am new to this forum so any advice is appreciated.
I recently rebuilt a hilux 86 3Y that i inherited from my dad.
The rebuild included a new engine head, pistons, oil pump and plug leads. After assembling the motor there was a slight jerk and loss of power after the car heated up.
Then replaced all the fuel filters and air filters. Problem still exists after replacing these so replaced the distributor and fuel pump.
This weekend drove the vehicle for 180 Km to theewaters which was ok but while there loss complete power in the vehicle and started back firing. Checked all the points and plugs and leads and that checked out ok.
Barely made it home with the car as it would sometimes drive ok but then suddenly drop rpm and start jerking. Got home and replaced the points and and redid the timing and swop the firing position of the 1st cylinder by removing the dizzie and reseting it. Idling is great but when i drive its still losing power.
Any suggestions on what to check?
Swop fuel pump back to old one?
Change condensor?
Replaced Dizzie as vacuum advance was broken.
