Sunroof Shattered

Hi gents. Sat morning we set off to visit family on a farm in 2014 Prado 150 VX. Close to Hekpoort, a massive bang! 1st thought blown tire.. but car drives straight nothing funny.. then 2nd thought blown engin as we heard what sounded like ( as wife described) ice being poured from a cooler box.
But no warning lights, no overheating.. so not engin. Then heard the noise above, and shimmer in rear view mirror.. stopped and saw the sun roof shattered! We do have a roof rack on, but no noise from it indicating that something hit the roof rack and went onto sunroof. Luckily the visor was closed..
So question is, has anybody heard of sunroofs shattering while driving? I have heard of them popping while standing in very very hot days. But not while driving? Image

My guess would be a stone bounced off the deflector?

I was driving on a good gravel road some years ago when a stone appeared from "nowhere" and chipped my windscreen. There were no other cars on the road, only me. Still have no idea how this happened.

Sometimes your tyre picks up a stone in the tread and throws it forward, toward the front of the vehicle which can bounce quite high when it hits the road and you end up driving into your own stone. Pretty similar to going through a puddle at speed where you drive into the very water you vehicle sprayed forward.
