Good day Every One
A friend fell in love with a Namibian Toyota (that's him, always the difficult road).
He needs some direction as to where to start if he wants to import it? Who does he contact? What is process?
Any suggestions (other than don't - because I already said that), will be welcome.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Importing a Toyota from Namibia
No idea other than to approach the local authorities to find out what the procedure and pitfalls are. I do however recall a similar discussion here many years back, but not the specifics. A search might bring it up.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!

Re: Importing a Toyota from Namibia
I imported a Hilux which I owned while living in Zambia and brought it back to RSA as a returning resident.
All I can suggest is that you make contact with a clearing agent who will do the export from Namibia and the Import into RSA. This will make your life somewhat easier as the requirements are continually changing.
In 2005 some of the requirements were:
1. INTERPOL police clearance to export
2. DTI Certificate (Department of Trade and Industry)
3. SARS - reams of documentation
4. SABS Certificate
5. Certificate of Origin from the Toyota South Africa
6. SAPS police Clearance
7. Roadworthy in RSA
8. Loads and Loads of border paperwork
Then the headache to licence the vehicle. (This could be easy or difficult - depending whether you have all the necessary documentation)
In some instances you may need an inspection done by Bureau Veritas
And you have to really love the vehicle you are importing.
All the best.

Just because it says "4WD" doesn't make it an off-road vehicle.

If the vehicle originally came from SA or he has owned it more than 2 years whilst residing there he can import it, if not, no go.
Afair.
Afair.

Yes. SA protects its vehicle market.Thabogrobler wrote: ↑Thu Nov 12, 2020 5:09 pm If the vehicle originally came from SA or he has owned it more than 2 years whilst residing there he can import it, if not, no go.

The "2-year" rule used to only apply if you wanted to bring the vehicle in duty free as a returning resident. One would also need to keep the vehicle for 2 years after importation otherwise duty would apply. However this may have changed.Thabogrobler wrote: ↑Thu Nov 12, 2020 5:09 pm If the vehicle originally came from SA or he has owned it more than 2 years whilst residing there he can import it, if not, no go.

BTW, you can import a vehicle from other countries under certain circumstances, like classic and vintage vehicles etc - rules apply though and in some instances can never be resold within RSA. Once again - all this could have changed.
