Our year end GTG is a planned day trip along the wild coast up to the Jacaranda on Sunday 15th Dec where we will have lunch. Bring and braai, or whatever suits you.

We will do this together with the local East London 4x4 Guys watsapp group (combined outing).

Time and place of departure will depend on the number of vehicles (will probably RV at the Engen station in Abbotsford).

Be sure to have a valid permit for the Transkei Coastal Reserve for that day. Permits are issued free of charge at the offices of the Eastern Cape Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism - contact Edwina Oates on e-mail Edwina.Oates@dedea.gov.za / tel 043 7074000.

So lets start the list .....

We will also be collecting kids clothing to be distributed amongst the kids in the rural Transkei along the way.

Midas Bowls Rd. have sponsored an ARB air pump worth R2500 to be raffled at R100 per ticket and the proceeds will go to buying clothing for the kids. Raffle will be drawn on the day of the outing and attendance is not going to be a pre-requisite, so open to all-comers - this should help pull in a few more $ for clothing.

So far we are sitting at a total of 21 vehicles! Going to a long day guys. We will keep the stops to a minimum so as to make the lunchtime braai.

Due to the high number of vehicles there won’t be time play around on the trail.
The other obstacle is the transferring of the vehicles across the Kei River on the ponts. They will be working from 7am. We need to be the first in line. Taking four vehicles at a time will take just over 2 hours!!! 20-24minutes per round trip of 4 vehicles.
Departure time from the Transkei side will be 9.30am. Any vehicle not over by then will have to play catch up.
The next challenge will be returning. Due to the high traffic volumes there will be other vehicles in front of us. The pont closes at 6pm sharp due to their license limitations. We would need to be back by 3pm at the latest and hope that there is not a long queue in front of us. Should we miss the pont we would have to return via Butterworth.
We would look to braai after the trip on the East London side.

We must also give a cut off time to leave from the rendezvous ..... (Engen garage in Abbotsford?) .... so that we are at the ponts by 6.30 / 6.45

The raffle was won by Marius Krause on ticket number 43, congratulations! Marius is also a forum member here ("ePikkeninni"). The kids clothing bought with the raffle money was well received by the local community in the area. Thanks again to all contributors.

The day itself was a blast and enjoyed by all. The weather hadn't played ball with intermittent rain throughout the preceding week and on the morning of the day itself, but cleared up nicely from mid to late morning as was expected by the forecast. Thankfully the trail was not too "snotty" as a result of all the precipitation as it had mostly soaked in and the trail itself was very rocky.

The weather outlook may have been responsible for the handful of cancellations we had on the day, but out of an expected 23 vehicles, we had a decent turnout of 18 - not too shabby.

The nature of the trail and few places / little time to stop meant that a lot of pics were taken on the move. Nonetheless there are a sheet load of pics accumulated by participants and there is no way I'll be able to post them all here ..... will sort through what I have and post later.

Some points of interest ..... yes this is a Hilux forum, not a Rover forum but the Landy and most of the Rangies are club members and one forum member here having owned or still own a Hilux. This was also a combined outing of the Hilux club and local "4x4 Guys".

Also of interest, the ferry across the Kei is the one that appears in the TV ad for the VW Sabatical.

Looks as though everyone had a good time.
No photos of the Jacaranda, would interest those who want to go there in future...

Unfortunately there is not much left of the wreck. Pieces of it are slightly visible at low tide.

I know and only the pieces that remain under water will last a bit longer, but those that get more oxygen above the waterline, ill disappear at a much faster rate...

A big thank you to Andy and the organizing team for the effort, making this a very successful outing. I must admit that I prefer to travel in a smaller group but thankfully everyone managed the trails without any serious incidents.
I decided to test drive Wade's sfa which we retrofitted a 5cyl diesel Mercedes 602 into.
I was very impressed with the very low down torque the engine delivered, giving the sfa excellent chugging ability.

I also was impressed with the overall fuel consumption of about 9km per ltr.

Anyway a good day was had by all and it would be great if we could have more of these events.
