Good evening I would.like to replace the local diff with an in import diff I believe that I would have to change the handbrake cables..was wondering if there was anything else I would need to replace..please advise

Good evening I belive that the import diff is much more reliable and has thicker side shafts..( Hilux Sfa forum) compared to the local gearmax diff..

Jip the side safts of the import diff is much stronger than the local diff. Local has 27 splines on the sideshaft while the import has 32.

Yes, not only the side shafts are stronger, but the diff itself as well. However my question still remains .... why do you want to change over?

The local diff is more than capable of handling everyday general use. The benefit of the import diff only comes into play when you are going to put excessive load on the drive train, so why go through all the trouble and expense ...... your vehicle is a 2x4 so it's not going to see extreme off-road use .... are you using it for drag racing? Bigger motor? what? ......

My Vehicle is a 4x4 I would be doing a bit off Roading later with bigger tyres ..I have spent R8500 to sort out the centre portion and two bearings then another R3000 for the left side shaft then the right handside shaft needs replacing that's another R3000 so wondering what next..

OK. Sorry I misunderstood / was under the impression that we were talking about a 2x4 here.

Anyway, strange that you're having these problems ... I have a local diff on one of my SFA's (the red one in my signature pics) and it's done about 220,000 km's with a lot of off road and some of it quite rough without any sign of a problem. You've now spent quite a bit of moola and basically you have replaced / sorted everything ..... could be that now it's going to last and you want to replace it.

The other thing to consider is that if you want to fit a diff lock at a later stage, it's easy and not too expensive on the local diff whereas on the import diff you're going to cough in the region of R25K to do it properly. The nice thing about a diff lock is that although it's not something that you would use all the time, besides cross-axle obstacles when you need traction it's there and it spreads the strain across both ½ shafts, so less chance of breaking something.

Back to your original question, pinion flange sizes and PCD should be the same, so no problem there and I don't think you will need to change anything with the handbrake either. You'll obviously need to set it up / adjust it with the "new" drums but otherwise everything is the same with both axles.
