Any advice on a 2008 Toyota Hilux 3.0 d4d which excessively smokes in the first 3 gears up to 2000rpm?

Black smoke means over fuelling. I'm no diesel fundi, but with my limited knowledge it can be due to a number of possibilities. I would suggest that you check that the particulate filter is clean, try an injector cleaner, clean MAF sensor (this has to be done very carefully with a non residual cleaner - search for topics here on the forum) and clean the CO2 sensor on the exhaust. If this fails I would then have the injectors professionally checked.

Just wait and see what the diesel guys here have to say (a lot of them don't check on the forum over weekends). :winkx:
