Looking for a Specialised 4x4 Mechanic in Pretoria

Post by shrick »

Hi All

I'm urgently in need to find the above person :)

I'm driving a modified 1997 Limited Edition SFA Hilux. The mechanical modifications are +- as follows:
  1. 1998 Prado 3.4 Petrol 5VZ-FE Motor
  2. 1998 Prado Automatic Gearbox & Transfer Case
  3. Front axel has been turned 180 degrees to get the diff at the right position. Modifications has been made to the axel for it to work in this way.
  4. I believe the front drive shaft is pretty standard.
  5. The rear drive shaft has been modified, but I'm not sure to what extent. I believe it has been made longer. There is no 'carrier' for this drive shaft, it runs free from the rear diff up to the transfer case.
  6. Front ARB diff lock.
My current issues:
  • Winding noise in the gearbox. I believe the gearbox needs a recon.
  • Very bad vibration in the drive line between 90-130km/h. At around 140km/h the vibration kind of goes away.
  • The vehicle is permanent all-wheel-drive (front wheel hubs are permanently locked). I believe this causes lots of strain on the wheel bearing grease seals. The front axels leaks diff oil & wheel bearing grease on both wheels. I'd like to know if there is a solution for this. Would like to have this fixed.
  • Rear diff lock does not engage.
  • There is quite a lot of play on the drive line. Thus, when I put the vehicle in Drive or Reverse it engages quite rough. Would like to know if this can be fixed.
What I require:
  • An extremely clued up mechanic that knows this kind of conversion and the SFA Hiluxes very well.
  • Somebody that takes pride in his work.
  • An honest mechanic that will make sure my vehicle is extremely well looked after, as if it was his own.
  • Somebody thats in or close to Pretoria.
  • Somebody that can hopefully fix all of the above issues in such a way that the vehicle will NOT let me down after the work has been done. This is very important. This vehicle has been EXTREMELY reliable. It has NEVER let me down.
Should it be required, I'll take & upload photos of the drive line, where most of the issues lie.

I'd very much appreciate good advice.

Thanks a lot.

Very interesting conversion. Especially the diff that was turned 180deg. could you take a foto?

That would mean that the front propshaft on a prado tcase turn in the opposite direction of the SFA? How do you fill the diff with oil?

Or could they have swapped the half/side shafts around?
