Right front sideshaft leaking oil

Post by Velo son »

Hi all

Yesterday I saw that the front right wheel arch is wet on the inside. When I took a closer look I saw that it is oil and from the smell and density of it I can confirm that it is Diff/ Gearbox oil.

What is strange is that the inner rubber boot (on the sideshaft) is dry (in fact, its dry from the diff) but the outer rubber boot (on the wheel's side) is wet. One can clearly see this on the photo. Should there even be oil at that part of the shaft?

It is not brake fluid or engine oil. Also, the brakes are still 100%

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Life starts when the tarmac ends.
I'll only lose my way in the city lights.
I'd rather be lost in the woods, than found in the city.

Mine looked the same, the outer boot had a crack in it and half-climbed off the wheel. Took toyota 3 tries to get it back. Possibly not the same problem but worth checking for cracks/tears

It could also be cv joint grease if there is a tear on the boot somewhere. With time the cv joint grease breaks down and becomes more liquid, literally pouring out the boot when you open it. There is no way that the gearbox oil can get there.
