Service - at home OR at dealer ?
Short history
2010 I purchased my Hilux at Barloworld Toyota Tygervalley
services has mostly been a PAIN, three of the previous 5 services it had to go back to the workshop due to half work
It is now due for its final service under the 5 year service plan. They have confirmed the service items as:
- oil change
- oil filter
- air filter
- polin filter
QUESTION - is it worth the trouble to take my baby to these incompetents one final time ?
Or do I just save myself a lot of frustrations and do this at home - WHILE I then take the time to grease the nipples on the drive shaft, and CHECK each and every item PROPERLY ??
bear in mind we are hoping to do some trips next year. So I will have to do these checks in any case

I will just bite the bullet, mark all your parts that need to be replaced, and make sure they are replaced when you take it in.
You paid for it, might as well use it.
At least you will get a free car wash as well

Re: Service - at home OR at dealer ?
In that case it seems settled.
A service you do yourself at home is WAYYYYYYYYYYYY cheaper than a heart attack and/or rehab for strokes.
Gaan vir goud!!!

HOPPY - what oil do you recommend for a 2,5 D-4D ?
The invoice just say 10W30, it does not give any brand name

Re: Service - at home OR at dealer ?
I prefer to do it myself, then I know what has been done and what not.
For big things I will take it to them, sometimes more because I do not feel lus for the hassle.
But a service is really so simple I cannot see why you need to be without a vehicle for a day.
What bothers me also is....
Nowadays all garages have this big oil container on wheels which they put under the vehicle to drain the oil and all vehicles' oil go in one big container, it is much easier. But the thing is, there is no way they can see how much oil they drain, ie they have no clue whether your vehicle is using oil or not. Also in the sever case of something really bad being wrong inside the engine, if you drain the oil and let it stand for 10 minutes you can see metal on the surface. Something which is also not possible with their way of doing.
And then of course, you have absolutely no clue what oil they put in your bakkie. They can tell you they use super dropper XXL whatever, but do they really use it or do they use the cheapest which can result in the highest profit?
Most their filters are manufactured by GUD, you can buy your own. Oil you can buy the best you willing to spend.
Chances are much bigger that if you see something loose or worn out, you will immediately fix it or make a plan to fix it, many workshops will just leave it because the car was not booked in for that problem.
To me it is not about the cost saving, but about knowing what is going on with my vehicle.

Pieter the bakkie had about 40 000 km when I crawled under it to check it myself before a trip.
they had not once touched the grease nipples !
I had to go buy a grease gun, took me a while to figure out where all the nipples were - and only a few minutes to do it
hulle is net plein slapgat.

Re: Service - at home OR at dealer ?

Re: Service - at home OR at dealer ?
net so jammer die lot se werkswinkel is so pateties.
PS - beste diens ooit was by Toyota Upington. Net jammer dit is so "bietjie" ver van my af

Ek het mos so ander probleempie, twee dae na my diens op 70000km gaan ek mos na die manne toe. Vra toe, het julle my airfilter vervang?

Re: Service - at home OR at dealer ?
Toyota wanted R3500 for a normal service on our Yaris
Geniune spares cost me R720 + R0.00 labour doing it myself. This was the 75 000km service. Having done the service myself, I doubt if the dealer did the 60 000km one, went front to back thouroughly and I now know the condition of the Yaris and can be at ease whenever CupCake is out.
Have to agree with Pieter, besides saving on costs, doing it yourself gives a true sense of security/reliability. Now she pulls like a new car!!! Whereas before even a slight incline required changing down.

My experience at B/world Tygervalley has only been good so far (3 or 4 visits). I get along well with the service advisor and he looks after me. Sad to hear I'm in the minority.

had a nice koffee while the service was done.
and over comes the service advisor and the mechanic .... hier kom n ding ...
at the Hilux he points out the brake balance valve - due to the aftermarket suspension it is standing tall WITH a load in the back, thus the balance valve is NOT distributing extra braking to the back as it should .... yada yada ... Now bear in mind that the suspension was done with 2 000km on the clock - so it has been in and out of that other dealership how many times and not once did they bother to point this out !! (okay I do feel dof for not having picked this up myself ..)
