D4D Turbo on its way?

Post by Saint_Diesel »

Good day all.
I had my 2011 3.0 4x4 d4d in for its 100k km service today. A few months ago I started to hear a VERY soft whistle sound. I asked that they check it out - and was told the turbo is most likely on its way out.
Quote: give or take a buck R25k.

First of all its not even that obvious(the whistle).
Is this a common problem @100k km??
Also I was told that the turbo cant be reconditioned (well was told it can but that I will most likely have trouble with it) and that there is no after market available which could be a straight swop.

So my questions are. Should I be concerned right away? Can someone direct me to a good specialist which can assist the best way forward and give me an indication of how long, if it will fail it is going to?
Also is it true for no recon, repair or after market?

I will appreciate any advice and/or direction.

Baie dankie.

I have Ford tdci with 380000 km on the clock turbo started whistling at 120000km and still does it ,however whistling
seems a bit more noticeable. In summer than in winter, maybe warmer thinner air makes it more noticeable

AFAIK a d4d turbo can easily be reconned.

every time I had a whistle on my diesel turbo car (not my hilux) it was a boost pipe with a hole and not the turbo. if it is the pipe you are loosing a bit of power and fuel consumption goes up but you can drive it like that till the pipe completely fails. speak to alpine turbo's. have had very good service from them on my turbo (way better than the rest of the palooka's out there)

Mine has always had a very slight whistle. My Friends brand new 3lt D4D has the exact same whistle. It is a good idea to check the pipes etc like rigardt says.

I have a friend, Hennie, with a Bosch certified service and repair centre in Alrode south. I had more or less the same issue with my C220CDI merc that went into limp mode. The Merc specialists told me i need a new turbo as the actuating part, yes its electronic, is caput and at R22k and i surely opted for a second opinion. I took the car to Hennie and he put it on his bosch diagnostic machine. We ended up replacing the very dirty air filter at R350 and my problem was sorted... I am sure Hennie can give you advise on this. His number is 083 303 0480
