Has anyone tried after market air filters on their D4D's?
Something like a K&N or a BMC? Are they available? Are they worth it?
I See value in them, in that they are washable and reusable and generally there is a performance advantage

Re: Aftermarket air filters
I would not consider them if you are going to drive in dusty conditions. I also understand that the amount of research that goes into making sure the original air cleaners are efficient means that using an after market filter will not necessarily give you a noticeable difference in performance and some say it may actually be worse.

The thing is that you oil those filters and they catch a lot more dust, On my bike they are a god send and they see a lot of dust.

True but the standard air cleaner has a cyclonic action which causes the largest dust particles to be flung out exposing the filter element to less dust and it has a much larger surface area therefore it takes longer to clog up. - granted you can wash and re-oil the others but you will need to do that more often.

K+N type filters are a NO GO for offroad vehicles. They are okay for street drag cars driven in a clean enviroment. The standard filters fitted by the manufacturer are far more superior and are designed for use in all types of conditions.

Just until your motor stops performing and you discover that there's very little compression on all cylinders. Then you'll have to re-bore, replace pistons and rings - you will have to do bearings at the same time, then there's the costs of skimming, gaskets and labour. The K&N will turn out to be the most expensive filter you can buy.Dippies wrote:I use a K&N filter in my D4D and it works fantastic. I you're considering it, you will love it.
If you're going to use the Lux in dusty conditions, stay with the Donaldson, there's no better air filter - clean the element regularly and replace if it becomes too dirty / choked.
Think about that for every litre of fuel you burn through the motor, you pass about 30,000 litres of air trough it.
I have seen what dust can do to a cylinder bore and rings - it ain't pretty.

Re: Aftermarket air filters
I would go for it, the K&N is my brand of choice, had many over the years and been very happy
If you are going in to dusty conditions just slap in the stock filter :)
