HELP NEEDED Connecting the rev counter on a WL2.5TD

Hi Hiluxers.

If any one has the knowledge on how to connect the standard rev counter in the Hilux SFA to a WL2.5TD PLEASE share. :beg:

There is a sensor on the left of the motor (standing in front of the bakkie) close to the crank that I have been told should be for connecting the rev counter to but there is a red and black wire coming out the sensor and I'm not sure how to go about connecting it up. :wth:

If needed I can take a pic of the sensor and its position on the motor..........

Tried connecting to it but dont get any movement on the rev counter.
tried connecting the rev counter to the black and then connecting the red to power, then connected the red to earth, nothing happens either way.
Tried connecting the rev counter to red and then earthing the black, then connected the black to power, nothing happens either way.
:wth:

So I must be missing something.

I am not really sure, but I dont think it is that easy. You have a rev counter from a petrol model which use a pulse. The diesel usually gets the signal from the injector pump that is more in a wave format.Or something to that effect. But I could be totally wrong :blackeye:

 so if you right ill have to change the rev counter first....

The best will be to speak to Hoppy. He has done a few of them.
I am looking at something like this for my rev counter

Well now this sounds like a similar problem I had.

Do you know for sure which is your signal wire for your tacho in the cluster? There should be 3 wires for the rev counter. Power, Ground and then your signal. If you are not sure which one is your signal then remove the cluster and look at the back. You should see a letter "P" at the back of the rev counter on the pcb. that is your signal. Trace that wire and that is where you connect the signal from that sensor. Double check that you do however have constant power and ground on the rev counter.

Confirm that you are using the correct sensor to get your signal. Use a multimeter for this. Dont just connect up, Might just blow something or even destroy the cluster pcb. not a good thing.

Got mine working perfectly after being told it can't be done without a signal converter. In the end I figured it out myself and didn't need a converter.

Good luck boet.

I didn't take pics of my solution as I was not sure it was going to work and when it did I was just too excited that I forgot but when/if I help Johno & it works we will take pics and post them.

If I recall correctly the signal wire for the rev counter (Cluster) is a black with white stripe wire. Could be different on different models but most wire colours are standard I have found.

Hi
My Hilux is a 1990 with the 4Y motor, I traced the rev counter wire from the dash to the engine bay where it abruptly stopped in the middle of nowhere connected to nothing. The wire going from the dash to nowhere is black, not far from where the black wire stops is a black wire with a white line with a male connection that will fit like a bum on a toilet seat with the black wire which has a female connection of the same proportions, but connecting the two produced nothing on the dashboard. And from the electronic distributor I only see two wires coming out connected to I don't know what, and I can not see a W on my bakkie's Alternator where I was also told I'll pick up signal for the rev counter that's currently counting nothing. But I'll keep on searching.
