Hello All ,

New to the forum , So firstly all the best for the New Year.

Abit about myself , Networking Engineer and looking at other options to help fund the 4x4 / camping need :D:
Also not shy at trying to fix and service any thing myself best way to learn, I think.

Looking at purchasing a Hilux , for some 4x4 adventure, But i am really confused on what can do the job and what can`t.
Meaning can a 4x2 be able to handle certain terrains ( most of the trails into and around Africa ) , or should i look at going a full 4x4.

Thanx guys

Welcome, season greetings to you as well
If the budget allows it,go 4x4 you will not be sorry.Rather be prepared than rather scratching places off your list.Nowadays some places will not let you in without an 4x4.

Cheers

Compliments to you as well and welcome to the forum.
No one drives around in 4×4 all day, but it's there when you need it...
Yes you will need it. The places you will have access to make it worth while having.

Welcome Warren!

Yes, youi will definitely need 4x4 at various stages of your trips. Sure, a 2x4 with diff-lock can achieve a lot, but so much more with 4x4 and a diff-lock with less hassle and less damage to the environment Spinning, digging and creating erosion points etc.).

A fair condition SFA is the best bang for buck without busting the bank. Parts are still cheap and working on them is a pleasure by comparison to newer units .... easy to learn how to maintain yourself. Also more ruggedly reliable ... can handle much more abuse and rough terrain than the newer IFS types .... just don't expect too much comfort. :D: ;-)

What does SFA ( older models ? ) mean and IFS ( New models ? ) ...
Is the 2,5 d4d worth looking at ?
I am sure to increase the torque and KW, I can slap on an inter cooler with stainless boost pipes and remap the ECU.
I know there is the SAC conversion but has there been any one given it a go to remap the ECU with one of the other tuners ?
I have remapped my current 1.9tdi and the power is great :celebrate:

Speed well that for the other car not the 4x4 :D:

Will keep browsing through the forum.

SFA = Solid Front Axle / IFS = Independent Front Suspension. ;-)

Hello Johan ,

I drive through Harties everyday to go to work ,

I think my max will be roughly 190k , I know its not much but i am sure that there is a deal out there somewhere to be found.
There are a couple 2002 KZTE`s and on wards out there , Not sure if those are good haven`t heard anything bad about them.

Sadly missed out on a deal of the year I think , Fortuner 4x4 2007 with 148k km for R148k :wth: , friends of mine sold it as they werent aware we looking out for something.

Hi and welcome to the greatest forum on the web.

What are your plans? Daily driver? Overlanding? just a few trails here and there but nothing too hectic?

Just for fun and excitement playing on the trails I would say SFA but 1- old vehicle and difficult to find a good condition vehicle. Not a comfortable ride especially on long trips.

Occasional fun and excitement with more daily driving I would say IFS - KZ-TE/2.7i. Problems with the KZ-TE are that you don't always know how the previous owner treated or mistreated the vehicle and thus often resulting in cracked heads. Costly to repair. The 2.7 on the other hand is much more reliable when it comes to the motor but is extremely thirsty. You can also look at the D4d's and 4l V6's but one doesn't normally want to get a scratch on the vehicle if it is such a new vehicle.

More overlanding I would suggest 2.5/3.0 D4d's as well as the 4L V6 Hilux/Fortuner but my preferred choice would be a Land Cruiser and preferably the 80 series Land Cruiser.

Good luck with your decision and keep us posted hey...

Hi Francisco

Thanx for the info ,
I want to be able to join the family on their trips into Namibia and those area`s.
Use it for camping and just really start enjoying the outside world with the new addition to the family :D:

If i can afford to have it there as a non daily car and have it there for the trips and camping then that would be the first prize.
I don`t mind the looks , but the wife hahaha bless her she likes the new shape :wth:
there is a comment on someone`s signature here in the forum that is truly great , making the best at what you got.

But thanx again , I like the diesels a lot purely of the 2.7`s that are thirsty

Just remember, all bakkies are heavy on fuel if you compare them to platkarre

Hi
I got the 2.7 IFS- great vehicle which I'm selling for R110k
Got almost full house and long range tank, stainless exhaust, snorkel ect..
wanting to "upgrade" to the Vl v6...good choice or should I hang onto the 2.7?
But as a first 4x4 or even a forever 4x4 the 2.7 is magic. Heavy on fuel but such a great bakkie.

Keep what you have as it is a very good motor with a few mods already on. It seems to be payed up...
You have no debt on it and it should still be in great condition...
The bigger motor will not be lighter on fuel & running costs will be more and you will have to spend money om Mods.
