Hilux 4x4 VHF Channel?
The 29meg radios were simple, everyone was on the same page (frequency).
I've just reprogrammed my VHF to yet another new set of ORRA frequencies 'caus everytime i get to the dunes there is a coms problem.
I added the Landcruiser Club frequency as it is an active one and there is normally someone on the other side, better luck than with ORRA.
I was just thinking, why don't we get a Hilux frequency we can use country wide? Surely it is not that expensive to register our own one?

I think it's just more difficult to get a national frequency than a local frequency.

Once we have the frequency, we can use it local, national and abroad, or doesn't it work that way?

Re: Hilux 4x4 VHF Channel?
ICASA Application Fee: R620.00 (Once off)
Local VHF Frequency (50km radius of your registered address) is R120 p.a.
Geographical Frequency (i.e. W. Cape only) is around R1100 p.a.
National VHF frequency for the whole country but not out of the SA borders is around R4400 p.a.
All prices mentioned above are irrespective of the quantity of radios you may have.
These figures are all ball-park, I have the figures at work but I am now officially on H-O-L-I-D-A-Y!!
BUT:
ICASA no longer licences Clubs, or so they told us. Each person would have to apply in their personal capacity. It would be an interesting experiment to apply for this as a Club however and see what happens. Perhaps they have had a rethink or we might just get lucky.

If we can up the annual membership fee by about R10.00 it will easily cover the cost and i think it will be a bonus if you join the club and get a frequency to use?

Pieter, start with a letter on the Club letterhead explaining what the Club is all about. Include a copy of the Constitution. I will handle the technical aspects of the application form.
No sense in doing it now anyway, all at ICASA are on leave but we can kick off next year. ICASA's financial year is April to March so we need to time it that, if approved, this only happens in April. But the application generally takes some 10 weeks to process so we can submit the application early Feb.

Re: Hilux 4x4 VHF Channel?
Please dont. Adds to the confusion.
As it is there are plenty channels/ frequencies being used:
ORRA1
ORRA2
ORRA3?
Marshal1
Marshal2
Marshal repeater
Lichtenburg repeater
LCCSA
Overland1
comes to mind and I know that I have missed plenty as well.

Re: Hilux 4x4 VHF Channel?
we have as many channels, but we use each one for specific events and competitions, but i would like to make the Hilux channel my default channel, something we can use daily, for traffic updates, events, chats, locating fellow Hiluxers, etc. How nice will it be to drive into a town somewhere and find a Hilux buddy on the other side.

Re: Hilux 4x4 VHF Channel?
Okay so can someone explain how it works. I have a radio in my Hilux and other than when we are driving a trails and come to an agreement what channel we will be communicating on I don't use my radio. When my Hilux fuel pump packed up on the N2 the other day and I was stuck in some dodgy location while waiting for Hoppy my knight in a white Hilux to recover me, I tried putting my radio on to see if I could communicate with anyone and nobody was available on any channels. So what is the procedure? Do people with radio's drive with them on or only on trails? And if they drive with them on which channel should I be on. I think it seems a waste to have a radio and only use it for 4x4 trails or when we do overlanding trips with others with radios...
Should I have more channels programmed into my radio.... It would be great if there was some way that while I was driving in my Hilux I could communicate with others within the radio's range particularly if I was in a difficult situation, or not...

Re: Hilux 4x4 VHF Channel?
Val, best is to simply leave your radio switched on to channel 1 - the new ORRA 1 channel, or alternatively channel 7, when driving. Channel 7 is the old ORRA 1 and it is inundated with security companies etc, some legal, some not. One cannot simply have additional channels programmed into a radio. You could, however, have a Neighbourhood Watch channel programmed into your radio assuming they're on VHF and you have the necessary permission from them.
One way of extending your communications range anywhere is by means of a Radio Repeater. All Radio Dealers usually operate one or more of these and the operating range is greatly enhanced, typically being anything between 30 to 80km radius from the repeater, depending on where the repeater is situated and the surrounding terrain. There is a monthly fee payable to the Radio Dealer, we charge R65 per radio per month but in major Metropolitan areas this could be higher.
All the more reason for Hoppy to move to Klerksdorp... I will give him free Repeater access! Now there's an incentive for the Oom! ;)

Re: Hilux 4x4 VHF Channel?
Thanks Eric.... Will try that and see if I pick up any communications on those channels when I'm driving. I know that when I have been travelling with a group of people on a trip we have sometimes picked up other people eg. construction workers on stop go's on our channel and sometimes in farm communities. Just thought it would be handy if there was a channel that communicated with anyone in range if there was an emergency situation in the city.... While on the subject of radio's am considering getting a handheld so that when I am travelling with someone without a radio they can use the handheld. What is the protocol, do I need a second licence and is there a handheld that I could use with my radio, and what is the distance within which we could communicate.

Strictly speaking every device needs to be licensed. In other words if you have a mobile unit and a handheld, you need to licenses.
Depending on the terrain, you can get up to 5km range from a handheld and maybe even further

Re: Hilux 4x4 VHF Channel?
Not to sure about that. Radio amateurs are licensed in person and any device he operates are therefore "licensed". With ORRA the device and not the person is authorised... in other words the roles have swapped around.GI Jane wrote:Thys I also thought I might have read something like that but was'nt sure....ThysdJ wrote:Did this not change? I will go see if I can find where I lost my mind, but I am sure I heard that ICASA is busy changing the rules... But maybe oom Eric knows... He can tell us when he is back from holiday...

Depending on the terrain, you can get up to 5km range from a handheld and maybe even further
Cassie, that is how ICASA used to work, but all this changed a couple of years ago. Whereas previously every radio that was operated on a particular system was charged for, this no longer applies and the user of the radio/s now pays a fixed fee (R120 p.a. for a single frequency licence) irrespective of whether the user has one or 100 radios in his/her name.

Okay Eric I know you are officially on leave, but think I will be needing a price list of handhelds, and a recommendation of which one you think is really good... when you can, please ...

Well let's see... I shipped two parcels on Friday, six parcels yesterday, two again today... ;)
And I found out I am useless at wrapping large parcels. Tossing them into the Courier satchels is a better plan, but they do not always fit!
I have one Courier satchel left, it might just have your name on it, GI Jane!

Re: Hilux 4x4 VHF Channel?
You can apply for it, but you will only get a licence for 50km around your home. And ICASA is no longer issuing "Club" licences. so each person would need to apply individually. hardly worth it.
I need to chat to them again and see if there is any chance of a change in this policy, but phoning ICASA has its pitfalls.

Oom Eric, wat sê Oom nou. Moet ons nou individueel by ICASA aansoek doen vir 'n radio lisensie? If a national frequency will mean adding R10.00 to our yearly subscription, i'm game.
It would be nice to use the new frequency at the annual GTG, is it possible?

Re: Hilux 4x4 VHF Channel?
Just a question - Even if it is a National Frequency assigned to the Hilux Club, you will still only be able to send and receive as far as your equipment allow.
Why then not just assign one of our current channels (the frequency) as a "National Frequency", the one on which we drive around and you can contact the other members on that channel?
In other word, pick one that was available in the old Channels, like Old Channel 1 which is the same frequency as new Channel 5 (as an example, I did not go and check how they align) and communicate this to everyone that we always drive around on this channel and can be reached on this channel?
Would that not be easier? Just a thought, please let me know if I am missing the point of the exercise!

Re: Hilux 4x4 VHF Channel?
Sorry uncle Eric(hoe meer hande hoe ligter die werk), I also sommer did some investigations via email.
ICASA just phone me like 2 minutes ago, and good news indeed. They do still give out VHF country wide frequencies. Just waiting for Ilona to come back to me re the pricing and etc etc.
Uncle Eric, I will forward all to you or Cassie once I get all the paperwork she is sending to me.
