Die hard hilux man
As my signature states I'm die hard Toyota man.
Having sold my 2.7 last year, I'm still in a state of depression.
Alas the plans are at the architect and house needs to be built. Oh why can't i just be a reckless fool.
anyhow, i'm still very much looking at the bakkie market.
My friends got a colt 2.8 tdi 4x4 and other pajero 2.8 tdi. Recently fishing trips with them local and overberg I was very impressed with the ride and power of the 2.8 engine. Colt driver had impressive best economy figures of 9.5km / lt.
Now i know fuel economy numbers are as believable as the size of fish caught, but i used my friends, and numbers quoted here + 4x4 community for my calculation. I for one got consistenly 7km / lt with my 2.7, whereas others said 5km/lt.
attached is very rough spreadsheet of my findings.
on the surface it seems the colt is the best buy. plsssss convince me otherwise.

I owned 2007 Club cab 2.8 tdi 4x2 best fuel consumption highway driving 85% of the time we ever got was 7.5 l/km or 13.5 km/l
the vehicle was brand new, sold it at 60000 km because of heavy consumption.
9.5km/l sound very good for 2.8tdi 4x4 they are notoriously heavy on fuel, very strong vehicle was sad to sell ,but my wife traveled far to work.

All i have to say,is nothing beats the look of the badge on the front of a hilux
The high fuel consumption of my 2.7,is the price i pay to enjoy my hilux, and would not drive another brand to save on fuel costs, guess I'm a Toyota die hard

Re: Die hard hilux man

Re: Die hard hilux man
ek is so bly jy het nie die cruisers se verbruik daarop nie, dis vir my erg om te dink julle manne kry dubbel en trippel die verbruik, en nog erger as ek aan my budget dink elke jaar deur namibie...

Re: Die hard hilux man
my reason for choosing these three vehicles :
* diesel is stronger than the petrol for towing as i plan to get a caravan in future and i heard 2.7 does not tow too well. And the torque figures confirm this. That sir lowry pass is my ever end, without a caravan already. Had many anxiety attacks approaching it with my 2.2's
* i love the lower rev ranges of diesel. diesel engine just seem to go so effortlessly at under 2000rpm. I know it will count against me in dune driving, and i thought normal sand driving as well, but experiencing the 2.8 tdi as passenger in 4H in sand , i'm quite surprised.
* So diesel is my first choice for fuel economy and power, even with the higher service costs, numbers still come out cheaper than petrol... but
* that head replacement costs... it seems all TD's suffer this problem in the 2000 model range. maybe it because they all now reaching their 200 - 300K mark on the clock that they showing these crack heads, and the newer generations on average not reached these numbers to really tell us if the problem fixed ?? Or is this problem just inherent in the higher stressed diesel engine. Although I have not heard of Isuzu suffer from head problems. This was also one of my first choices till i saw the 280dt being quite lower on toque values.
* what the complete costs (part and labour) to replace KZTE head with the AMC head (recommended here) , and is it then bullet proof after that - yes, the driver plays major role in the reliability of the engine and driving diesel at 130 - 140 on highways will kill it, but let's just assume i will drive it like miss daisy.
