VW AMAROK
2.0 BITDI ( 120 kw ) 4 X 2
"We literally idled to Western Zambia,
towing 4.1 tons of steel, burning 10L/100km"
My experience with the Amarok bakkie…

We departed Kriel, Mpumalanga just before dark. We travelled only through the night with
reason to keep the trailer tyres cool, though it was dangerous as we encountered lots of
stray animals and elephants in the road.

Departure from Kriel, Mpumalanga
The Amarok towed really smoothly and we could not exceed 80km/h as the trailer started
swaying. We towed mostly in 4th gear and sometimes 5th and at times I had to release the
accelerator because the bakkie was picking up speed on its own, even on minor uphills.

Pulling up major uphills through Loskop dam was not even an issue, the problem was coming
down, one due to us being so loaded, two due to the brakes that were not bled by VW
Hatfield ( Commercial ) in Pretoria when the vehicle was taken for a Service shortly before
our departure date.
After bleeding the brakes at the nearest petrol station and topping up 330 ml break fluid we
carried on to the Groblers bridge border post.

We filled up where ever we could, as we did not know the distances to the next petrol
station, though we had two 20l jerry cans of spare diesel, it is was not necessary as
theorytically we could have made it on one tank of diesel through the whole of Botswana,
from Martins Drift to Kazankula border post, Zambia.

We literally idled our way to Western Zambia, towing 4.1 tons at 10km/L @ around
1800 rpm. And may I add, the Amarok was loaded with tools, grinding machines, 6.5kva
generator, 3 tools boxes, camping gear, spares etc, even the back seats were loaded to the
roof.

Out of curiousity we decided to weigh the Amarok and Trailer at Martins drift weigh bridge.
The weigh bridge controller issued us with a certificate reading 6.8 tons, and without saying
a single word to us we slowly put foot and got out of their. I lost the weight certificate
somewhere along the line and ended up physically calculating my materials loaded which
gave me a combined weight of 6.6 tons.

My last filling point was in Zambia, Livingstone town. As from there on we took our own
diesel (105L in jerry cans) and our destination was 340km away from nearest shopping centre or petrol station.
The last stretch of road was the worst 35km of dirt road I ever travelled, we hit the middle
of the raining season, Zambesi river sand everywhere, Chinese trucks running up and down
all the time as they building a new road next to it. We scraped through that dirt road on diff
lock only barely getting through, but we got through in 1st gear and never exceeding 2000
rpm. We bent the front disc protection plates and the tow bars trailer plug backwards from
the depth of the ridges in the road, and broke off the trailers jockey wheel.

No fuel consumption was recorded after as we filled from jerry cans.

Volla het goed gedoen, maar julle vat groot kanse met so swaar wa. Hoewel, ek moes ook al so iets doen. Soos die spreekwoord sê: Nood leer bid!
