1UZ-FE Fuel pressure regulator

Ever since my conversion I have had one major problem and I am getting conflicting possible reasons for this.

The problem is when in HOT conditions and I am in 4wd on a trail the fuel starts “percolating” and then I need to basically loosen the fuel line and pump the fuel out of the line until it starts flowing smooth. When I release the fuel line then the fuel sprays out of the fuel rail. Extremely dangerous I know but don’t know of any other solution out in the bush. I have also previously removed the return line from the fuel rail and turned the vehicle on but NO fuel comes out.

A: Now I have been told that the fuel pump is the problem. Not enough fuel pumping through per hour and pressure too little. It is a Siemens internal pump.

B: I have also been told that the pump is perfect but that the fuel pressure regulator is the problem. It is not opening so the fuel does not return to the tank thus putting strain on the pump and fuel in the line starts percolating.

What say you?

I need to sort this out by next week and don't want to change both regulator and pump if not necessary. Please help.

We've had that problem many times before, you need to measure about a liter per minute on the return line while it's idling, route the fuel lines as far away from the exhaust and other heat sources as possible, i use a flexible high pressure fuel hose for the suply from the tank through a E18 filter to the engine, i found that the rubber insulates better than steel. Keeping the tank more than half full also helps

I completely forgot about that because someone told me to check that but then got distracted with the other stories. Will give you feedback once I have done and tested it.

And once you have tested that and the test result is less than what it should be, what will be the cause?

Thanks Blom for the advice yesterday and thanks for the regulator.

I got home and fitted the regulator but still nothing so Saturday I am going to get a loan 2.7 hilux pump to test as well as reroute my fuel lines. Then all 3 of the possible problems are checked. From there it should be perfect. Will keep you guys posted.

I would agree with Allan.....
Sounds to me that BEAST of a motor is generating so much heat under the hood, like you mentioned at the Bridgestone event, that its boiling your fuel....
I think wonc you have moved the fuel line it will be sorted, and once you get the bonet vented like you mentioned that will help even more.....

Hope its sorted soon cos im sure its a royal pain in the rear end when you in the bush.....

Yes I am also sure that moving the fuel lines will help and that was and is definately on the to-do list but after so many different opinions during the week and the fact that the fuel does not return to the tank made me look at the regulator. I am going to look for a bonnet scoop over the weekend at autostyle.

It is a flippen massive pain. But worst of all I am hoping that it is not running too lean which could burn the valves due to the incorrect fuel pump.

Kry vir jou nBosch Pomp vir binne in die tank . Part no 0 580 453 UNI hy pomp 3 Bar en sal die ding doen. Is nie nodig om jou bonnet n scoop in te sit nie, dit sal nie jou probleem oplos nie.

Thys made 33mm spacers that he fitted on the bonnet hinges for Kaspaas at some stage, it worked well, but it looked to much like a street racing Ford from the sixty's so he fitd an intercooler scoop facing backwards. The nicest solution is the bonnet vents from an Opel kadet T Car or first generation Opel Astra, they look good and fits perfect.

Just a quick update.

After fitting the regulator it didn't seem toe help so went and got a new peprol pump on Saturday. Only got time to fit it on Sunday morning. Droped the tank, took out my VDO pump and installed the DENSO pump, connected the fuel lines before fitting the tank again, Tried it and still no fuel returning.

Then Ernst (Cleaner) came around for som moral support and assistance. Decided to take his V6's return line off and check, Also no fuel returning so mine must be correct, Might only return when under torque while driving.

Then he helped me reroute my fuel lines to outside my chassis, where they connect to the tank we ran the lines between te body and exhaust so as not to get heat from the exhaust, ran alont the outside of the chassis and into the wheel arch. we removed my vender and ran them inside the wheel arch and through 2 holes into the engine bay where they connect to the fuel rail.

Now I will only be able to test once in the bush so that will be this weekend. RDW. Hoping for the best. All 3 possibilities have now been addressed so I am sure it will work now.

Hi . The 1uz non vvti must have a constant return of fuel in return line . Press must be at 40-55psi . The 1uz vvti engine does not have a return , factory place the fpr in tank . I fitted a aftermarket fpr on vvti via t pice to return .

You are welcome dude! Just a bloody nuisance that it gave you trouble again! I hope this last fuel line replacement, the one with the cut hose will now sort it out!

Oem Ecu can adjust and compensate for mixtures up to 12% more pressure .

I also thought that I had that problem.........even wrapped my fuel line in allu Foil while in the bush. The bakkie would jerk and stutter and stall during slow LR off roading. Faster driving on sand etc was fine.

So I first of all added a Surge Tank.......Then wrapped in Foil. .........until one day at Vleesbaai 4x4 it just stopped completely. Only then did I realise it was the Fuel Pump that packed up.

Hehe...........so I now have Main tank..........small fuel filter......lp fuel pump....surge tank.........hp pump......heavy duty Fuel filter......and FOIL WRAPPING....so far it seems to work well.

It might have been a combination of all above??

Thanks ! Mine shows 30 psi at idle at the moment :? Should I disconnect the vacuum line or leave it connected but do the setting with the pump just primed but engine not running, before setting it to 42 psi ?

Yes just close the vacuum on engine side and set to 42psi .
