Re: Cooling the 1KZ motor

Re: Cooling the 1KZ motor
If somebody have a obvious overheating problem, remove the thermostat completely and go and drive the same hill again. See if it is better. If it is better you know it is the thermostat.
My Oupa on the Plaas very often sommer chucked the thermostat out completely. The engine just takes longer to heat up, thats all. Normally in winter he used to put it back.

Re: Cooling the 1KZ motor
Just remember that there is a 10mm hole behind the thermostat that must be closed by the thermostat. If not closed or blanked off the water will circilate mainly in the engin and not threw the radiator.

Re: Cooling the 1KZ motor
This can become a long discussion and somebody must please correct me if I am mistaken because we do not want to cause any damage to somebody's engine, but Vlak Vark, the waterpump's output pipe is about 30mm big and I guess it pumps water directly to the radiator. So if it have to go via a 10mm hole, most water will not rather go through the 10mm hole than the 30mm hole, it will go where the least resistance is and that will be the big hole.
Or is my reasoning wrong?

Re: Cooling the 1KZ motor
Very interesting read indeed, Thabo, and thanks for sharing. One thing I know I want to replace is the fan, only because I do not know it's age and effeciency, then see if the problem still persists, not that I think I'll know for sure since I won't be driving in the same conditions as we did in Namibia. Then also consider a 76 degree thermostat, but truth be told with our normal temperatures and driving I have no issues at all. Never a cracked head even and motor is sitting now on 328 000 km.
Do you think the small 5mm hole drilled on the thermos, would help?

Re: Cooling the 1KZ motor
The hole in the thermostat some people do as safety measure when the thermostat gets stuck. That way it is not fully closed and some water can still go through

Re: Cooling the 1KZ motor

Re: Cooling the 1KZ motor
OK dit maak sin ja. So dan lyk dit my om die termostaat uit te haal om te toets is nie 'n opsie nie

Re: Cooling the 1KZ motor
