The Toyota Blog wrote: The Hilux 2.5 D-4D (Raised Body) Raider Double Cab is the latest recipient of Toyota’s technologically advanced Variable Nozzle Turbo (VNT) diesel engine. Following the downsizing trend, this new powerplant - which comes courtesy of the Fortuner 2.5 - offers a lot more grunt, enhanced fuel economy and enhanced refinement, without having to hike up the engine capacity.
The performance stats are impressive: power shoots up from 75 kW to a substantial 106 kW, while torque rises substantially from 260 Nm to a monumental 343 Nm.
A lot of the credit for this must go to the variable nozzle turbo, which is a technological tour de force. The turbine blade, for example, is infinitely adjustable, allowing for the blade angles to be optimised depending on engine load. Another clever piece of tech comes into play when the exhaust gas pressure is still weak - the blades close, forcing the exhaust gas to flow in a narrower area. This in turn automatically increases the pressure that allows the compressor to work. At high rpm, the angle of the blades is fully open to avoid the kind of pressure that can damage a turbocharger. It’s also worth noting that the turbo is activated at very low rpm due to the fact that the blades are powered by an electric motor. The new engine is mated exclusively to a five-speed manual transmission.
In addition to the engine upgrade, all Raider models plus the Xtra Cab SRX are now offered with exterior mirrors that are electrically retractable. Manual headlamp levelling has also been added to the already extensive features’ list on all Hilux models.
The new Hilux Raider 2.5 D-4D (Raised Body) Raider Double Cab carries a price tag of R358 000 including VAT. This model comes with a standard 5- year / 90 000km service plan.

260 @ 1600-2400 -> 343 @ 1600-2800

I wonder what these engine upgrades are going to do for the 3.0 D4D... the current 3.0 D4D is pretty far behind the market leaders, so Toyota have some catching up to do!

I'm guessing they will then introduce the VNT to the 3.0 D-4D as well

i think they are not going to be doing the 3.0 D4D anymore. but i may be wrong
Question is, how do i get one of these new turbos fitted to my 3.0 D4D???!

Just for comparison sake, clearly Toyota has some work to do, all diesel engines:
Nissan(Navara): 3.0 V6 170kw 550nm
Ford(Ranger): 3.2 4Cylinder 147kw 470nm
VW(Amarok, bi-turbo): 2.0 4Cylinder 132kw 400nm
Toyota(Hilux): 3.0 4Cylinder 120kw 343nm
I think a look at the reliability of these engines may see Toyota on or near the top again.

For what it's worth, I'd say a better Nissan competitor here must be the 2,5 with 140kW and 450Nm. The V6 is way to expensive to compare with the others. And the new Amarok now sports 420Nm over a wider rev range than the 400 Nm version did. Ford Ranger is actually a 5-cylinder.

Does the 3.0 D4D not have a VNT already???

Re: New 2.5 D-4D delivers much more power and torque
I'ts about time they wake up.
This technology might be new in Toyotas, but it's been around for 15 years or more, the Mercedes called it a "variable vane turbo", as used in the Sprinters, CDI's etc. and Ford / Mazda started to use it about 6 years ago in the previous 3.0 diesel.
Basicly the flow and direction that the exhaust gasses hit the turbo wheel is altered, (like when you play with a bearing and an air pipe) it sounds simple, but you need some clever electronics to control the actuator, we've tried to do it manually, the results was not good.

The 3.0 D-4D does have a variable vain turbo already. Is Variable Nozzle turbo the same thing?

According to wiki yes the same thing :https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variabl ... rbochargerCasKru wrote:The 3.0 D-4D does have a variable vain turbo already. Is Variable Nozzle turbo the same thing?
It's seems like the author of the article his a misunderstand of how VGT work. The actual turbo vanes (the spinning ones) never change angle. It's additional stationary vanes that's install at the entry ports (nozzle) of the turbo that the change the way the gas enters the turbo.
