Re: Dripping from brake drum?
Tristan, looks like your oil seal on the drive shaft has gone, not a difficult repair at all, but I took mine to drive shaft center to have both sides done, I think it was R550 in total, 3 years ago? do it asap as it wont be long before it affects your braking
could also be brake fluid but drought it

Hi Tristan
Hoop jy kom gou reg mater

Re: Dripping from brake drum?
Oops, sorry I took a quick glance at the image yesterday, now I took another look, thought it was the front wheel, now see it's actually the rear wheel therefore it's not the half shaft seal, which is at the front... say no more...

Re: Dripping from brake drum?
I would say outer axle seal, would get onto it before it washes the greese out of the sealed rear wheel bearings. I just did mine. Also the brake shoes realy hate diff oil and should be replaced if found to be soaked with the oil.

Re: Dripping from brake drum?
I have nver stripped the rear axle so Im not sure but does the rear axle not have bushes at the ends, just behind the seal, like the front axle?Tristan wrote:Well in amongst all my running around the country lately I have been trying to get this problem sorted out.

If so, this could have been the problem. If it is worn then the drivce shaft moves thus wearing the oil seal into a out of round shape and it will stat leaking. Then no matter what shaft you out in, it will do the same thing.
How are the wear marks on the old shaft, around the seal area?

Re: Dripping from brake drum?
Hi Tristan,
This is just a shot in the dark.....my Camry I had had a leak from the rear drum and I bought the rubbers/seals kit for the slave cylinders and replaced that.....problem solved.
Wonder if that might not be your problem either or do you definitely know that it is the side shaft??

Re: Dripping from brake drum?
Hi Werner
Im pretty certain it is the side shaft because the brakes were opened up to get cleaned by the mechanic when the bearing kit was put in, so Im sure they would of seen if there was a problem.
The old side shaft did have some ware marks were the oil seal sits so I think that was probably the culprit
I haven't actually checked if it is leaking again (Im to afraid that it might be )

Re: Dripping from brake drum?
Hi Tristan, look at post "Diff housing bend", I fixed that seal twice but the oil from diff started leaking again, Gert at Menlyn Gearbox & Diff centre showed me my diff housing is bend, so every time it pushes the seal out. He says he gets the problem a lot with Toyota, not the bend housing but when you compress everything together you should check it while doing it to see when at the correct place, not a very good design. They either over- or under press.
