well, have done searches on the net, and found a variety of kayaks

however was wondering if someone here has them and plays on them, mainly looking at doing some fishing with one just past the surf

thing is, witch one to get??

actually I know so little about them that its dangerous

I would only recommend two manufactures if you want to fishing off shore in a paddle ski, a stealth or a pinnacle can be quite pricy look around and you can get a good second hand one just make sure it is the correct size before you buy. Your knees must just be bent and you must be able to reach the pedals comfortably, Imagine 5 hours out at sea if you not comfortable you will start to cramp up .

I have the normal two seater Fluid and it is very stable
Stable enough to pull crayfish nets .

and here starts the issue, saw them at the gateway show, and only catching a wake up now
however have seen others on the net

the stealth is fibre glass

and here some of the questions
witch one is the better one, what are the advantages either way

As long as you put the right type of mealies and pap on the hook, any ship will do, they should handle the Vaal dam waves well.

The plastic one can take bigger knocks and has more flex

The fiberglass one is easy to repair

I'd go for the plastic

have a whole bucket of mealies, wonder what flavour to add for What species, wonder how big a feeding spot I will need in the sea?

which sea? Germiston lake? just don't go beyond the shark nets, you'll get run over by a truck

no need to worry about that. they now have a barrier up.

The fiberglass one is easy to repair

And the tupperware one hardly ever need repair, had ours for 3 or 4 years now and no hole so far even after running onto some rocks a couple of times.

Ha Ha, I am no big fisherman, I am very happy with one hand line and some shiny hooks, they do the job.

have read on a site, that as boating becomes mire expensive kayaks have taken off as an alternative for fishing diving. . . . . .

have been looking at second hand ones, as some guys have bough and either hardly used it or even never used and still wrapped.

the other spaner in the works, jeep has just gone in to repair hail damage, so even If I got a kayak now, would not be able to sort out the carrier till just a few days before we go

have looked at so many, and think that those are available at outdoor warehouse, think for R7300

the fluid Bamba goes for R8300

although on paper the Bamba does look like the better one
it has more waterproof compartments

however from what I can gather on the specks its not as wide as the others, and from my limited understanding would mean not as stable

Easy packing roll up throw in the boot and pump up in 2min with a hand pump. The "crocs" is the best. We have a few of them and they get used daily and the oldest ones is more than 12 years old.
And the chance of flipping getting threw the waves is a lot less than in a kayak.

no, I have not abandoned the topic

still busy learning about the options, and have looked at plenty on the net and even taken some for a test paddle

saw some nice inflatables, however was told that to get them out past the surf is another story
there is one that is made in the USA, cant remember the name of details or link, however that looks interesting

also learned about the industry politics, and people will talk bollie to try and sell you a kayak

did however find people kind enough to let me have some test paddles

have looked at those, and normally I watch the junkmail, olx and gumtree

looks like am pretty settled on a fluid Bamba, for the reason that it has all the compartments, and the rod holders as part of the deal out the factory
then the Bamba has the material that gives it the 30% buoyancy out the factory

then have lined up a few good deals that are waiting for me when I get to the coast

yep have looked at the wilderness range

and on price the Bamba also seems to come out tops

don't wish to count my eggs before they hatch, so when the deal happens and me have it, will post more details, and share all the info

kayaks, kayaks, kayaks ... the debate will go on forever ... just like which is better, Nikon or Canon ... petrol or diesel ... Yamaha or Mariner. It all boils down to the one you choose and ultimately what your application will be.

When I bought my kayak these were the things had to consider:

1. I would only use it for salt water inshore fishing.
2. I fish in Cape Town where there is a prevailing south easter.
3. I needed something that I could surf the waves with ease on the return.

so ...

If you're going to to fish fresh water, go for tupperware. they're light easy to launch and retrieve and tough. If you're going to sea, you need minimum 4meter length, as required by SAMSA. If you're fishing cape waters you need a rudder. You are never going to get back to land paddling into a south eaterly wind with no rudder to help you steer. Fishing fresh water? ... well wind won't really bug you that much and I'm sure in most cases there will be some "dam boot" to give you a hand if you do get stuck.

I wanted a place to put my catch without worrying about it getting lost in the surf if I do capsize, so a nice big fish hatch was mandatory.

So this is my opinion:
fresh water = tupperware
salt water = Stealth

go check forums like sealine.co.za and read what the guys say about the types of kayaks, but you'll find that most inshore anglers favours Stealth and fresh water anglers favours Fluid.

some feed back and interesting facts learned

there seems to be some regulation not sure if they are law or not for kayaks going into the sea or just some self imposed rules

some of them I can understand for the safety point!!

however the guys are talking about belonging to a club!! that is out for me!!

however, the others that I have picked up are that sea going kayaks have to be min 4m long, that takes the Wilderness out of the equation and leaves me basically down to the fluid bamba!!

yes safety is very important, however for the guys living inland its easy to miss the idea that some sort of regulation even exists
this was in reference to the KZN coast, wonder if the guys in the cape have the same thing!!

self plan on tacking a two way radio and a cell phone in a water proof bag!!

Fernando, I never experienced it myself - I am too BIG for those things!

I do speak out of experience from friends who used to fish Kosi bay back in the day when the regulations were not so strict as nowadays and you could actually launch the ski's from anywhere and not just regulated launch sites.

For beginners, three things are extremely important, 1. the launch (both ways), 2. comfort and 3. ease of use.

1. If you cannot get out of the surf into the backline, you cannot fish. I remember the guys battling to get through some rough seas at Kosi and it was always a mission to get everyone behind the backline. Get a ski that is easy to launch through the waves!
2. If you spend the time to make it through the surf zone and get to the backline, make sure that make the most of it, you have to be comfortable on the ski for at least 4 hours.
3. Check the location of the wet hatches, dry hatches, rod holders etc..you do not want to struggle out in the ocean on a ski with equipment etc.

Some of the guys still fish off ski's (although they have boats), and fish in the Guinjata Bay classic every so often. To put it into perspective, my one mate rows out to the 100m mark to find Amberjack (species count for the comp)! Lekker laf!

and as the. . . . . was itching badly, tried to launch it, yep should if waited for calmer seas
at 1st it started well, over/through the waves, then came off
and kept on trying a.d trying and trying, till I hurt my knee, and am still in pain, although much better

bough one of the kayaks with a small blemish they call it
hence why I got it for such a good price

now the failure to launch is on video, just need some time to edit, convert and upload
maybe only once me back in jhb
also got nice paddles

Thursday, the plan is to go to one of be lagoons around here, so every one else can also paddle, wife and friends, and if we get a nice calm sea, will attempt a launch again
