Hilux 98 model 2.7lt petrol making ticking sound
Hey guys I have tried searching this but could not find much. I have a ticking sound on my hilux 2.7 lt petrol. Im pretty sure its not the exhaust as i have had a good feel, look and listen around the exhaust manifold while someone had there foot on the end of the exhaust.
The ticking sound is not there all the time only when i put load on the car like overtaking and climbing hills. It seems to be lacking in accerlaration too really have to put the foot down to get any where. Was wondering if any one could help on where to start. was going to change spark plugs, oil and filter and try running some subaru upper head cleaner through the car to see if it makes a difference. Car has 229,000ks on it. Any advise would help a lot.
Thanks Bj

Not sure if pinging could be the problem. Meaning a setting on the timing might solve the noise....

Re: Hilux 98 model 2.7lt petrol making ticking sound
Where exactly is the ticking sound coming from the exhaust or engine?
Check your speedo cable if the sound seems to come from behind the dash engine area,my uncle had that problem on his kzte and it turned out to be a loose speedo cable

The fact that you have lost power suggests to me that one of your HT leads or distributor cap or coil is arcing causing the sparking/ ticking sound
best way to check this is at night with all the lights off, open your bonnet and plant the throttle open hard and look to see if you can see sparking anywhere
hope this helps

Agree it sounds like a pinging problem. Have the ignition timing checked. Might not be a bad idea to have a compression test done as well just in case its pistons / rings related.

Re: Hilux 98 model 2.7lt petrol making ticking sound
I know that sound and cannot fond it either. It sounds more like a cracked exhaust manifold than a ping sound. It is very light and you only hear it sometimes.
That was the first thing that bothered me when I got my trokkie 5 years ago. The first thing I also did was to check the exhaust manifold and the joint between the manifold and pipe.
5 years later I have not found it yet and so far it has not caused any problems.

+1. I had a loss of power with Hound Dog and replaced the whole plug lead harness. Expensive, but supplied the cure.krazy_kameleon wrote:The fact that you have lost power suggests to me that one of your HT leads or distributor cap or coil is arcing causing the sparking/ ticking sound

Re: Hilux 98 model 2.7lt petrol making ticking sound
sounds defintaly in the engine bay some where. I will try and get a hold of a compression tester to test pistons. Not using any oil but so hope it is all good. Spark plug leads do look old but the are not really stiff no idea how old the actually are. Coil packs look fairly new too. How would you check the timing on these utes? Im not that really sure how to do that or is it a matter of changing the plugs and leasd and seeing if that helps??

Re: Hilux 98 model 2.7lt petrol making ticking sound
Do as Rick (krazy chameleon) says. You are loosing spark some where (ticking sound) and that will also cause a loss in power. Do you have a slight miss when idling? If so this will also indicate faulty plug leads.

Re: Hilux 98 model 2.7lt petrol making ticking sound
Hmmm..... if its a loud ticking/clancking noise, almost like a small hammer in the engine, only when accelerating, but quiet otherwise, it could be a big end bearing starting to fail...... an oil pressure test with a mechanical gauge on the sender port, will confirm this, if indeed it being so.
But i do agree with the above statements.... check for the obvious and lesser serious cracked manifold and spark issues first.

Re: Hilux 98 model 2.7lt petrol making ticking sound
I think I found the ticking sound on my Hilux
Mine sounds like a cracked manifold.
Today I went to powerflow to fix the front silencer.
The guy then said that we should check the flange between the exhaust and the manifold as the 2.7's tend to warp those flanges.
The exhaust specialist use a piece of garden hose, put one end in his ear and put the other end near the joint between the manifold and exhaust and guess what, it is leaking. If you just listen in the engine bay you can't hear it, but if you listen with the pipe you can hear it.
So the leak is so small you don't normally hear it when the engine idles, but when you are driving you can hear it.
The other thing is that the front silencer cracked around the pipe on the back end of the silencer. Roddy said that is also typical 2.7 and he normally just fixes it, he dont replace it since he loves that little Toyota silencer. He says it gives the engine some nice low down torque, if you remove/replace that you loose some torque.

Re: Hilux 98 model 2.7lt petrol making ticking sound
I had exactly the same ticking sound on my 2.7 since i bought it. Must say I completely forgot about it and it might be because its not there anymore.
Must be because I replaced my whole exhaust system from front to back with branches and powerflow system.
Will confirm if its gone when I get back home........thanks for that one Pieter.
